Health Canada endorses Lallemand Health Solutions’ probiotic strain for women’s health
22 Apr 2024 --- Lallemand Health Solutions reveals that Health Canada has officially acknowledged the efficacy of its probiotic strain, L. plantarum Rosella, in supporting women’s health through vaginal application, opening up new possibilities for Canadian women seeking natural solutions for the infection.
The company will present more information about the findings at the upcoming Vitafoods Europe trade show in Geneva, Switzerland (May 14–16) at booth F52.
Health Canada granted specific health claims for the strain highlighting its benefits for vaginal and female health, including support for maintaining a healthy vaginal microflora, maintaining vaginal microbiome health and promotion of healthy vaginal pH levels.
Additionally, in combination with antifungal treatment, the probiotic has been shown to help delay, lengthen or improve relapse time for vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) or recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (rVVC), as well as reduce clinical signs associated with the infections.
“Rosella has a solid clinical background with demonstrated passage and efficacy by oral intake and other supportive clinical data by vaginal application,” Élodie Aragon, the product manager at Lallemand Health Solutions, tells Nutrition Insight. “These studies demonstrate its effectiveness to promote vaginal health and as an adjunct to conventional treatments to help manage VVC or bacterial vaginosis (BV), depending on the intended use and dose, as vaginal administration or oral intake.”
“L. plantarum Rosella is already well documented and Lallemand Health Solutions women’s health research and development platform is actually working on other probiotic strains to bring health solutions for pregnant women. More info will be shared about this at Vitafoods Europe.”
Expanding the women’s probiotic space
L. plantarum Rosella is already available in several countries as an orally administered probiotic. The claims granted by Health Canada allow the company to expand its offerings to provide women with more options for maintaining the health and balance of the vaginal microbiome.
Health Canada’s approved claims include “source of probiotics,” “helps support female or vaginal health,” “helps support a healthy vaginal microflora” and “maintains a healthy vaginal microbiome”.
“L. plantarum Rosella is a unique strain, with mechanistic and clinical evidence, extensively studied worldwide in over 800 women, in six clinical studies, including two by oral intake and four by vaginal applications making it one of the most documented probiotic strains in women’s health,” Aragon explains.
“Its versatility makes it a convenient choice for women seeking intimate health support, from helping to maintain proper vaginal balance, to being used for recurrent VVC.”
Evidence-based results
As interest in natural health solutions grows, Lallemand Health Solutions says the company is at the forefront of probiotic innovation, offering products that address a wide range of health concerns.
“Lallemand Health Solutions is currently having some ongoing discussions with partners that will hopefully be able to offer the probiotic to Canadian women and, just like our other natural products, no prescription is needed,” Aragon explains. “L. plantarum Rosella will be offered by vaginal application to Canadian women only.”
“This confirmation opens new possibilities for Canadian women seeking natural solutions for their intimate well-being. As an orally administered probiotic, L. plantarum Rosella is already being offered by Lallemand Health Solutions in Asia, the Americas, France and the Czech Republic at a different dose and is supported by previously approved Canadian health claims.”
