A new study has found that vegan children and adults have an adequate dietary intake of calcium, protein, and vitamin D levels, which is important for bone health. However, key differences include bone metabolism and lower protein levels compared to omnivorous eaters. The study in the European Journal of Nutrition links vegan and vegetarian diets to accelerated bone metabolism. Finnish start-up Perfat Technologies has raised €2.5 million (US$3 million) in Series A financing to scale its fat alternative, which transforms liquid vegetable oils into solid, functional fats. The company is poised to bring to market the fiber-reinforced gelled vegetable oil, developed with 80% less fat, 30% fewer calories, and added fiber, positioning it as a disruptor in the saturated and tropical fats space.

A blind spot in the US Animal Welfare Act (AWA) excludes the species of animals widely used in these industries. Nutrition Insight speaks with Humane World for Animals to learn about the loopholes that allow animals to go unreported and reveal what it would take for scientists to commit to cruelty-free practices. The AWA does not protect rats, mice, or birds, and they are heavily used in nutrition studies. Greg Sower, toxicologist and science adviser in the Animal Research Issues department, criticizes this exclusion, flagging how this results in their continued pain and distress.

Innova Market Insights data indicates a 4% year-over-year growth in supplement launches with nutraceutical and functional ingredients between July 2023 and June 2025. Nearly one in four launches were vitamins/minerals. Supplements for energy and stamina accounted for almost one-third of launches, while eye health recorded the fastest growth. Magnesium stearate was the most widely used nutraceutical ingredient, and di-magnesium malate reported a 173% increase during the same period.
