Innova Market Insights data has shown an increase of 48 percent in the number of food and beverage launches globally in 2018 (year to date) relative to 2015, and the adaptogenic herb’s market potential has not gone unnoticed by suppliers, with both Arjuna Natural and Sabinsa announcing the launch of ashwagandha ingredients this autumn.

US study uncovers "continued" use of harmful ingredients in OTC dietary supplements

15 Oct 2018 --- Potentially harmful active pharmaceuticals continue to be identified in US over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplements commonly marketed for sexual enhancement, weight loss or muscle building, according to a study published in JAMA. The researchers analyzed US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings from 2007 through 2016 to show that unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients were identified in 776 dietary supplements. In response, US health bodies and trade associations are calling for consumer caution and reform to ensure supplements are free from pharmaceutical contamination.

25 Sep 2018 --- Consuming a supplement rich in carotenoids can help reduce muscle damage associated with exercise, specifically running, a clinical study funded by wellness company Lycored has shown. According to the researchers involved in the study, these initial results open the door for additional studies to explore further the role of carotenoids and tomato phytonutrients in complementing an active lifestyle and allowing people to optimize the benefits of exercise. The results of the study have been published in the peer-reviewed scientific periodical, International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. 

Unpredictable stimulant? Higenamine dosage variation forms major threat, warn researchers

07 Sep 2018 --- New peer-reviewed research into weight-loss and sports/energy supplements containing higenamine has found unpredictable, inaccurately labeled and potentially harmful dosages of the stimulant. Based on the findings, the researchers are urging consumers to use caution when consuming supplements labeled as containing higenamine. The use of dietary supplement leads to an estimated 23,000 emergency department visits each year in the US, and weight loss and sports supplements contribute to a large portion of these emergency department visits. The cardiovascular stimulant higenamine was added by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to the list of substances prohibited in sport two years ago. 

1 in 4 adults physically inactive and at risk of disease, says WHO

05 Sep 2018 --- More than one in four adults globally – amounting to 1.4 billion people – are physically not active enough, with inactivity levels reaching one in three adults in some countries, new data published in The Lancet Global Health show. Policies to increase the physical activity levels of populations need to be prioritized and scaled up urgently to stave off the risk of poor health, note the involved World Health Organization experts. Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent and treat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and different types of cancer. It has also been linked to improved mental health, quality of life and well-being. Moreover, it helps prevent hypertension and obesity.

Seaweed packaging: Lucozade trials plastic free sports hydration with edible pouches

31 Aug 2018 --- Lucozade Sport has announced plans to trial plastic-free sports drinks and gels encased in an edible seaweed outer layer. Brand owner Lucozade Ribena Suntory has teamed up with materials engineering startup Skipping Rocks Lab to trial their revolutionary Ooho product at selected running events beginning in September 2018. The trial will expand to wider UK based events in the new year, a Lucozade Ribena Suntory spokesperson tells PackagingInsights.

The research could pave the way for lutein to be used in a wider range of supplements or sports products.

24 Aug 2018 --- US sport nutrition company Momentous has launched a new line of plant based protein powders designed in collaboration with dietitians and strength coaches from the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. The product contains pea protein isolate, extracted from a non-GMO yellow pea, combined with rice protein concentrate. These two ingredients are the fastest absorbing plant protein sources available, and when combined, also complete a full amino acid profile. Currently, Momentous AbsoluteZero Plant protein is offered in Vanilla Chai and Piedmont Chocolate.

Drink up: Dehydration can affect human brain shape and task performance

22 Aug 2018 --- When dehydration strikes, part of the brain can swell, neural signaling can intensify, and doing monotonous tasks can get harder, exercise physiologists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have found. With the help of brain scans and a simple, repetitive task to test responsiveness, the researchers studied volunteer subjects who sweated a lot and did not hydrate. The fluid loss led most of the subjects to make more goofs on the task, and areas of participants' brains showed conspicuous changes.

15 Aug 2018 --- Coca-Cola is to acquire a minority ownership stake in Bodyarmor – a fast-growing line of premium sports performance and hydration beverages – in a move that signifies Coca-Cola’s challenge to the strong market player Gatorade, which is owned by Pepsi. Financial terms of the agreement, including the size of the acquired stake, have not been disclosed.
