How microbes can boost protein content and health benefits in fermented foods

US research recently found that microbial proteins significantly contribute to the protein content of fermented foods, like yogurt and cheese. We explore the findings with one of the study authors, who tells us that microorganisms do not just help foods ferment but also boost their nutritional profile and potentially have health impacts. These food-fermenting microbes raised protein levels, reaching up to 11% of the total protein content, making up 60% of the identified proteins.

Researchers reveal gut-brain axis role in protein-seeking behavior

A South Korean animal study has uncovered how the gut directs the brain to seek out essential nutrients and detects protein deficiency. It discovered a gut-brain signaling system that quickly changes feeding behavior through coordinated neuronal and hormonal pathways. The authors state that, although animals are known to seek out foods rich in protein, the biological mechanisms linking nutrient deficiency to selective feeding behavior are not well understood.
Nexira introduces BloomEase to reduce menstrual discomfort and fatigue

Nexira has launched its first targeted solution designed to support women throughout the menstrual cycle, BloomEase. The nutraceutical combines yarrow (Achillea millefolium), which is used traditionally to soothe menstrual discomfort, and magnesium. Nexira notes that this mineral is known for its benefits on mood, fatigue, and psychological function. The French ingredient supplier says BloomEase offers benefits before and during menstruation, with demonstrated efficacy in a human study. This showed consistent benefits across menstrual discomfort, mood and energy, and quality of life. 
Ahiflower oil omega-3 maintains heart and brain DHA, study finds

Natures Crops International welcomes new research affirming that mammals can form as much docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as needed from plant-based omega-3 sources that do not contain DHA or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). While EPA and DHA are linked to various health benefits, plants contain the omega-3s stearidonic acid (SDA) and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), which the body needs to convert. Previous research indicates that ALA is not a good source, but that SDA is a promising alternative.

ADM has introduced eight new soy- and pea-based protein ingredients across North America and Europe, as food manufacturers continue to expand beyond traditional animal protein formulations and seek more diversified plant-based options. The launches include soy protein isolates, concentrates, textured proteins, and pea flour designed for applications ranging from dairy alternatives and beverages to hybrid meat products, bakery, and specialized nutrition.

US health tracking platform Function recently acquired SuppCo (The Supplement Collective), which offers an app that independently tests the quality of commercial supplements. Function now offers access to SuppCo’s assessments alongside its own health screening service — which includes lab work, imaging, and clinician guidance — enabling consumers to more comprehensively track how specific dietary inputs are shaping their biology. SuppCo oversees “Tested by SuppCo,” an independent certification program that anonymously purchases off-the-shelf supplements and verifies their active ingredients through an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory. It does not directly profit from the sale of supplements.
