Susanne Klaus of the German Institute for Human Nutrition notes a “protein paradox” when it comes to the surge in high protein diets and marketing. “On the one hand high protein diets have been shown to be very effective in weight loss and reducing liver fat content for people with fatty liver disease, but on the other there are epidemiological studies which show that a high protein intake is associated with a greater risk of diabetes or maybe even increased mortality. So these facts don’t always fit together.”
