Symrise spotlights aronia’s antioxidant potential in new health actives range
10 May 2022 --- Symrise has released a range of aronia health actives offering multiple cellular antioxidant effects. The range expands the company’s Taste, Nutrition & Health segment of health actives – the diana food portfolio – and includes an aronia extract and aronia juice powder, both standardized in polyphenols and anthocyanins.
Symrise also filed a patent application for the aronia extract. The company adds that research has shown aronia’s potential cardiovascular, metabolic and immunity benefits.
“Early on, the team recognized aronia’s great potential for the food, beverage and supplement segments. This small purple berry comes with a long history, as Native Americans traditionally used it,” says Nathalie Richer, global health business leader, Business Unit Naturals of Symrise Food & Beverage.
“Today, we see aronia as a potent natural ingredient with almost limitless application opportunities. We have created some interesting concepts, such as energy and immunity gummies. These include a combination of aronia polyphenols and natural vitamin C from acerola, which contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system.”
Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) – often known as black chokeberry – is high in polyphenols, notably anthocyanins, “strong” antioxidants.
Polyphenolic content and suitable applications
According to Symrise, aronia is considered a superfruit and hence a vital component of the better-for-you health trend. Aronia’s antioxidative properties have been related to cardiovascular health, metabolic health and immune system support.
According to Symrise, the aronia extract has demonstrated cellular antioxidant effects. Symrise has demonstrated the aronia extract’s specific cellular antioxidative effects on various cell types, including intestinal cells, using a specific cellular model.
Under the diana food portfolio of health actives, the aronia extract comes with a particular polyphenols profile: high total polyphenolic content, high proanthocyanidin content and a specific proanthocyanidins-to-anthocyanins ratio.
In powder form, the carrier-free, free-flowing aronia extract contains a minimum of 50% total polyphenols and 10% anthocyanins. Suggested applications for the aronia extract include capsules, tablets, powder sticks, nutritional shots and supplement gummies.
Symrise adds that a minimum of 2% total polyphenols and 0.2% anthocyanins are present in the spray-dried, soluble aronia juice powder. Powder drinks, healthy beverages, snacks and foods are all possible uses for the juice powder.
Symrise’s Taste, Nutrition and Health division supplies natural ingredients with verified advantages in key areas such as gut health, immunity, cardiovascular health, brain health, mobility, urinary tract health and beauty-from-within.
Microbiome research, probiotics and partnerships
Symrise previously tapped into the potential of probiotics and partnered with Probi to introduce NPD and research.
Last October, the supplier introduced SymProBiome, a microbiome research and product development platform. The platform collects data and equips manufacturers with a thorough understanding of the microbiome to develop ingredients for the skin, oral cavity, gut, scalp and underarm areas.
In partnerships, Symrise and Probi introduced SymFerment, a skincare ingredient made from Probi’s upcycled Lactiplantibacillus (Lactobacillus) fermentation. The two companies also collaborated on developing the “first processed probiotic” for oral health called SymReboot OC and SymReboot L19 a probiotic ingredient for dry scalps.
