Symrise-Probi partnership yields processed probiotic for oral health

09 Jul 2021 --- Symrise has launched its first processed probiotic dedicated to oral health. SymReboot OC has proven efficacy in strengthening gums and promoting a healthy oral microbiome. It can be used in various products, including toothpaste, mouthwash, lozenges and gum care.

It consists of the mildly heat-treated Lactobacillus plantarum HEAL19 with an intact bacterial structure, a specific strain of bacteria isolated and owned by Probi. 

Due to their intact cell walls – aided by True Biotics processing technology – the heat-treated strain behaves like a probiotic, despite being no longer viable.

SymReboot OC uses the same processing technology as skin and scalp care ingredient SymReboot L19, also developed with Probi. 

In April, Symrise first shared that it is collaborating with the Swedish probiotic company to “open up new horizons” for cosmetic manufacturers using probiotic ingredients.

Now, SymReboot OC is moving things forward by bringing this unique knowledge and approach to the oral care market,” says Léa Schmidt, global product manager of actives at Symrise.The use of probiotics in oral care products is becoming more widespread. 

Abundance of benefits
SymReboot OC is inspired by proprietary research focusing on biofilms grown in the Symrise ex vivo oral biofilm model.

The product offers multiple benefits for the oral cavity, including sustaining its instinctive defenses for a strengthened barrier and supporting a healthy balance of the microbiome. 

Specifically, it strengthens the oral mucosa barrier and soothes the oral cavity, as well as promoting the maintenance of healthy gums and preventing gum issues. 

SymReboot OC works without preservatives and comes in powder form. Symrise notes that final product manufacturers may find this technology easy to handle and further integrate into formulas.

Probiotics for oral health take off
Symrise notes that the use of probiotics in oral care products is becoming more widespread, and global consumers are embracing the proven health benefits. 

Market insights from the company show that 69 percent of consumers like the idea of using toothpaste with probiotics, 63 percent expect toothpastes to soothe sensitive gums and 36 percent expect it to maintain their overall dental health.

Earlier this week, Probi invested the equivalent of around US$6.4 million in Blis Technologies, which offers clinically documented bacterial strains to support natural immune defenses, preventing mouth and throat infections. The strains also contribute to dental and gum health.

Other probiotic players have also been eying the oral care space, with BioGaia launching its Prodentis product for the mouth earlier this year. In November, Chr. Hansen broke into the oral health sector with the launch of a probiotic lozenge.
