New hope for asthma sufferers? Hofseth BioCare’s OmeGo fish oil may offer relief, tout experts
11 Nov 2022 --- The nutraceutical ingredient could help to reduce lung inflammation, restore respiratory health and reduce lung scarring caused by eosinophilic asthma, a new study reveals. Human trials are in the pipeline following this study that was conducted on mice.
The company further states that studies to assess the possible effects of OmeGo on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pollution-induced lung inflammation and gut health are also in the works.
OmeGo is classified as a New Dietary Ingredient by the US Food and Drug Administration.
“This latest study strengthens the growing bank of evidence that OmeGo, derived from fresh, whole, minimally-processed salmon, offers an extensive and varied health benefit profile beyond nutrition,” states Dr. Crawford Currie, head of medical R&D at Hofseth BioCare.
“OmeGo is the closest consumers can get to eating whole fish, and these latest findings show its promise in helping the body resolve inflammation, rebalance the immune system and promote healthy aging.”
A whole fishes’ worth of benefits
The company states that its patented hydrolysis technology allows it to utilize “fresh, sashimi-grade salmon by-products” in the making of the supplement, which includes 21 omegas and fatty acids.
Furthermore, the oils are “enzymatically liberated from fresh Atlantic salmon and are a close proxy for consuming whole fish.” The company further touts the product’s low oxidation levels.
“Fish oil is heavily processed and concentrates on just one or two elements of whole fish, such as omega 3,” explains Currie. “While important, omega 3 makes up only a fraction of the fish and its full potential is, therefore, unfulfilled.”
Extinguishing inflammation
The Hofseth Biocare-funded study, published in Biomedicines, found that the product “significantly reduced” eosinophilic asthma-related lung inflammation and scarring in mice.
Moreover, it reaches these results without the side effects of the medications used to control moderate asthma, such as the nervousness, shakiness and headaches associated with albuterol – commonly referred to as “rescue inhalers” – the weight gain that can come with steroids like prednisone or the upper respiratory infections and sore throats that are common with inhalation steroids.
Thanks to our gentle manufacturing process, the significant inflammation-resolving benefits and protective effects against allergies associated with high-grade, fresh Atlantic salmon are preserved,” Currie adds.
Fish oil face-off
The trial lasted for seven days and included 50 mice and compared OmeGo’s effects on dust mite-induced inflammation and fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs with cod liver oil and the pharmaceutical fevipiprant.
The mice were split into five groups of ten and given either a placebo, 500 mg of cod liver oil, 18 mg of OmeGo, 36 mg of OmeGo or 2 mg of fevipiprant.
The low- and high-dosage of OmeGo reduced eosinophil counts by 7% and 10% more than cod liver oil, respectively. The pharmaceutical reduced the count by 18% more than cod liver oil.
Rather than replacing medication, the company holds that the ingredient is “a pragmatic and proactive route to attaining better health outcomes, including improved immune response and more robust respiratory health.”
The omegas in fatty acids have also been linked to cardiovascular health and a recent study has shown that the omegas in fish oil may help restore the cognitive function of those experiencing symptoms of long COVID, while another study revealed that supplementation could slow some of the effects of aging.
