ADM at CPHI 2022: Holistic gut health solutions and clean-label ingredient transparency
19 Oct 2022 --- ADM will showcase the breadth of the capabilities it has honed during its 120 years in the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industry at the forthcoming CPHI 2022 in Frankfurt, Germany (Nov 1-3). The company will shine a light on its technical expertise, solutions and specialized R&D.
Additionally, the pharma-nutra ingredients player will focus on solving specific challenges within dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals and functional foods spaces that include innovative solutions and science-backed ingredients.
These solutions include holistic approaches to supporting the gut microbiome and well-being as well as providing plant-based solutions and transparent sourcing of clean-label ingredients.
“Today’s consumers increasingly seek out ways to proactively support their overall health and wellness,” Marie-Bénédicte Charpentier, marketing and growth director for EMEA at ADM, tells NutritionInsight. “More people are attentive to ingredients and targeted benefit areas of their dietary supplement, functional foods and pharmaceutical options.”
“At CPHI, we will showcase our high-quality refined oils for parenteral use, including active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients that are derived from vegetable origins, providing cost-effective, bio-compatible solutions that also help support consumers’ pursuit for earth-friendly, plant-forward offerings with clean product labels,” Charpentier explains.
Representatives from the company will display and discuss these solutions at booth 80J41 in the Integrated Pharma zone.
Focus on innovation
The company also plans to showcase its scientific and technical expertise by featuring the latest solutions to both manufacturer and consumer needs, noting that they all meet and often exceed the relevant standards and regulations.
The company will further feature solutions that meet consumers’ desire for natural source-derived ingredients, such as its extensive protein portfolio and its Color From Nature library.
“Markedly, our concepts will feature our proprietary and patented micronization technology, which create vibrant colors derived from natural sources with plating characteristics, keeping them stable across different formulations,” Charpentier underscores. “We recently introduced our new PearlEdge line of proprietary white color solutions.”
“With the EU ban on titanium dioxide (TiO2) now in effect, manufacturers are looking for alternative ways to achieve a bright, uniform white color, and we will be showcasing how brands can achieve just that through PearlEdge,” she says.
Mastering the microbiome
ADM will also feature products that support the gut microbiome. A report released by ADM found that 58% of consumers are making the connections between overall health and wellness and the function of bacteria in the microbiome. The company expects that number to increase over time.
Moreover, ADM has found that consumers are increasingly seeking holistic and natural solutions to support their gut health, noting that probiotic supplements are predicted to outpace total dietary supplements through 2026.
To meet the needs spurred by the growing consumer awareness of as well as the ever-expanding research into the gut microbiome, ADM states it is continually identifying new microbial strains that can meet those needs while helping to incorporate them into convenient formats and offerings such as stick packs, gummies, jellies and drops.
“For example, concepts featured at CPHI will showcase our award-winning BPL1 – the Bifidobacterium animalis subspecies lactis CECT8145 – and its heat-treated counterpart, BPL1 HT, which target factors relevant to aspects of metabolic health,” says Charpentier.
“Containing nonviable microorganisms, BPL1 HT can withstand harsh formulation environments like high heat, providing formulation versatility in offerings like our ‘Fit Gummies’ and chewing gum concepts that will be shown on-site.”
She adds that the company will also show its FastMelt Sticks – a concept developed with probiotic strains specially selected and formulated with naturally-sourced flavors.
Expanding capabilities
Furthermore, the company plans to display capabilities and solutions developed as result of its recent acquisition of Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes. Most notably, ADM will showcase innovative well-being solutions like DE111, which has been shown to support digestive health and strengthen immunity.
Moreover, the company highlights a study that found that DE111 can actually germinate within the small intestines and survive the harsh conditions of the stomach as well as the biles and salts experienced in gastric transit.
“With that study’s findings on top of DE111 being a spore-forming probiotic – meaning it retains functionality through challenging processing conditions that may otherwise damage conventional lactic acid bacteria probiotics – it’s opening the doors for more innovation in the dietary supplement and functional foods spaces,” stresses Charpentier.
