ADM closes Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes acquisition in bid to strengthen microbiome solutions
22 Nov 2021 --- ADM has completed its acquisition of Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes. While the financial details of the purchase have not been released, the agri-food giant is setting its sights on diversifying its health and wellness portfolio.
“One of the fundamental structural demand trends driving ADM’s growth is consumers’ increasing focus on health and well-being, with global demand for health and wellness products estimated at more than US$775 billion,” says Vince Macciocchi, president of ADM’s Nutrition business.
He continues that around four in ten global consumers are seeking microbiome ingredients – prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics – in customized F&B products.
Tapping into evident demand, ADM recently showcased a probiotic chewing gum concept at CPhI Worldwide.
In line with this, Innova Market Insights crowned “Gut Glory” as its sixth Top Trend for 2022. The market researcher notes that two in three global consumers say gut health is key to achieving holistic well-being. The microbiome represents one of ADM’s six strategic growth platforms.
Deerland’s specialties across varied health categories
ADM’s acquisition was first announced at the start of this month.
Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes is a global provider of dietary supplements using probiotic, prebiotic and enzyme technology, including a line of 12 branded products.
These serve customers in areas including digestive health, immune health, women’s health, food intolerance, sports nutrition, cellular repair, and systemic and cardiovascular health.
The company’s products and solutions include spore probiotics, which offer enhanced stability for wider use in food and beverage, pet nutrition and supplement applications.
“I’m particularly proud to welcome the Deerland team to ADM,” adds Macciocchi. “They’ve built a truly groundbreaking business, and we’re excited to work with them to power growth, strengthen ADM’s leadership in dietary supplements and functional foods, and serve customers around the world.”
A full-service business
Macciocchi also highlights ADM’s other recent moves to strengthen its microbiome ingredients, including its recently-announced proposed joint venture with Vland in China.
“ADM offers a global, full-service, science-backed Health & Wellness business that is well-positioned to meet fast-growing demand from consumers who are eager for a wide variety of food, beverages and supplements that enhance health and well-being,” he concludes.
In late October, ADM pegged microbiome health, holistic nutrition and plant-based demands as key factors set to reach new highs next year.
At CPhI Worldwide, ADM experts shared how the gaps between the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical spaces may be diminishing as companies continue to maximize the market potential for their ingredients.
