Mineral salts to tap into market trends

At Vitafoods Europe 2019, NutritionInsight spoke with Bruno Reinoso, Account Manager Food at Dr. Paul Lohmann, about mineral salt solutions to tap into market trends. At the show the company focused on calcium carbonate as DC granulate with gum arabic, which is well suited for direct compression to chewable tablets with a pleasant mouthfeel. The product is dust-free and free-flowing. The combination of different magnesium compounds has various advantages when compared to the use of single products.

Bruno, could you tell us a bit about the strongest consumer trends that are currently informing R&D at Dr.

Paul Lohmann?

Actually, what I was looking at now in the market is very different.

In the regions that you are working at, for example, if you look into the European regions, then you can notice that the sport nutrition is increasing a lot and also the new product developments are always getting newer, not only in the mineral salts, but also in the different applications that they use in this kind of.

Food supplements.

But if, for example, if you look into the South American countries and you see more about wealthiness and, wellness and and health, then also use another kind of minerals but also different kinds of, food supplement forms and dosage forms.

Right.

Now when it comes to some of the concepts you've brought to the show to tap into these trends, what are some of the standout ones?

The first one is iron for generations.

We started with iron over 130 years ago, so we have a lot of low-ha with this.

So what we see in the market trends, especially for example, In countries in developed countries like for example South America and Africa, there is a lot of demand of iron sources so we have over 50 different mineral salts of iron that you can use for food fortification, iron food fortification, for example, this time we have.

Gummy bears, they, they are fortified with iron pyrophosphate.

Iron pyrophosphate is a great source of iron since it has a very good bioavailability, but also iron is a very tricky, salt that you can, you can, you can to handle since it's very interactive.

In this case, iron pyrophosphate doesn't interact with the with the food matrix but also has a neutral taste.

The other one that we, we can, we can use as an example of this 50.

Materials that we have as an iron iron source is the iron fumarate micro encapsulated.

This is the stick which is actually for direct consumption, and this one is micro encapsulated with with fat which is going to avoid the interactions of iron with the with the food matrix.

This is also going to, it's free flowing and it's also a material that it doesn't taste like this strong metallic taste that usually iron has.

Now magnesium is very much trending as.

What are you seeing in this space?

Magnesium is worldwide one of the most used mineral salts that everybody is looking for, and the question is, is magnesium actually magnesium, because you have many, many sources of magnesium in the market, but you never know what to take.

So if you think outside the box, maybe you will think, OK, we have magnesium oxide, we have magnesium bis, magnesium allate, magnesium citrate.

So what we are looking into this, into in this show is to promote more or less, to have a mixture of different magnesium sources in order to have, for example, a different, time release in your body and therefore you will have also, a longer.

Effect of the, of the intake of magnesium, right?

Finally, any technical advancements that you'd like to highlight?

Since Dr.

Paul Loman has a A company that is always looking into new new innovations, we are now promoting the DC granulate with Arabic gum.

This is, yeah, this is, the new product that we are promoting.

It's not new in our product portfolio.

This is, calcium carbonate with a carrier of, gum arabic.

This is an alternative to PVP.

And for for countries where this product is no longer allowed, this could be a very good alternative for for for the market.

It also gives you a very good mouth feeling when you when you chew on the on the tablets, and also it's a product that you can also use it as a gluten-free product as.
