Award Winning Pea Protein for High Dispersibility

11 Jul 2017 | Glanbia Nutritionals

Glanbia won an innovation award at IFT 2017 for their BevEdge Pea Protein. With a surprising ability to mix into beverages with ease, BevEdge is a game changer for powdered drink mix brands seeking to give consumers a superior experience. Unlike typical pea protein in drink mixes, our patent-pending BevEdge Pea Protein disperses immediately, is bland for easier flavoring, and expresses flavor better without typical pea notes. Made in the USA from Canadian yellow peas, BevEdge Pea Protein delivers the benefits consumers expect. It has a high level of protein, a clean ingredient statement (just label it as “pea protein”), as well as kosher, non-GMO, and gluten free certification. Available in regular and USDA-certified organic options, BevEdge significantly improves the consumer experience in meal replacement RTMs and in smoothie and yogurt toppings.

The IFT Food Expo in Las Vegas and I'm here with Danielle Black from Glanbia Nutritionals, and Glanbia have just won an award here for their Bev HP protein products.

Congratulations.

So yeah, what, what, what is the product that you offer and what are the benefits?

Yeah, thank you.

Thanks for inviting us to speak about it.

Gambia is known as a dairy supplier, and in the past few years we've started to supply more plant protein ingredients, and a lot of our customers sometimes ask us, you know, can you make plant proteins taste or perform like a dairy protein?

And so we said, sure, we'll try.

So we came up with, you know, specifically for ready to mix beverages, we came up with this beverage pea protein.

And we wanted to take a look at improving the functionality of pea protein in a ready to mix beverage, and we actually won this IFD Innovation Award for the product this year, which has been pretty fun.

It is a patent pendent patent pending process developed by the Blabia R&D team, and I'll do a little demo here if you want to take a look.

Yes, because I think the key differentiating point is the dispersability.

That's, absolutely.

So dispersability is a key factor.

So I'm going to show you, so this is what a conventional pea protein might look like, you know.

So there's different pea proteins on the market, but a lot of them tend to have, you know, this look and feel, and I'll put just imagine you're a consumer putting a scoop.

Into, you know, into water or juice or almond milk in the morning.

And now by contrast, this is the beverage pea protein, so it looks a little bit different.

And now I'm going to add this to water as and right off the bat you can see that one looks a little clumpier than the other.

Again, this is the beverage pea protein.

It's a conventional pea protein.

So now, and some people you shake your bottle, some people put it in water and stir with a spoon, but as you can see while I'm stirring this, this goes into solution right away, and you have some uniformity in terms of the pea protein dispersing into the beverage.

And now over here I'll mix up the conventional pea protein.

And you do see a little more clumping happening and it will of course go into solution eventually, but from an appearance standpoint as a consumer, you might look at this and say, you know, maybe that looks unpalatable.

So the idea was to try to see if we could make pea protein look and work better in an RTM beverage.

But it's, you know, aside from the dispersability factor, there are a couple of other benefits, so I'll just go through those with you.

One is just the, you know, when you look at, when you look at beverage pea protein in the bottle, you can see it kind of flows like water, you know, it's, it's a predictable flow rate as opposed to a conventional pea protein that's a little stickier.

So you can imagine this in a processing plant.

It's going to be tougher to predict, you know how there's going to be more clean out because it's going to be sticking to the equipment and it's going to take a little longer to blend because you want to have an even blending.

And then it's going to be less predictable in terms of fill rates in the canisters.

So we also beyond the performance that the consumer sees, we also wanted to help our customers, you know, save some cost and increase their production efficiency at the plant level.

And then finally, this is something unfortunately I can't really show you over video, but we'd love to send any customers a sample and so they can test it.

Themselves, but the beverage pea protein has a much milder scent and aroma.

So when you're, if you were to smell these side by side in a conventional pea protein, you might pick up more of a grassier beany note, whereas in the beverage pea protein, it's pretty neutral.

So when you're using beverage in combination with a flavor, you could potentially use less flavor.

Or maybe some more subtle flavors to have a better impact in the formulation.

So instead of tasting like a chocolate pea protein shake, it'll just taste like a chocolate shake.

Is the product already available?

Can you already customers already buy the pea protein?

Yes, so we just, this is really our official launch week, you know, here at.

It is commercially available.

We have stock for samples and pilot trials, so while customers are expressing interest in working with us and maybe using this ingredient in their formulations, we can support them on the supply and availability side and just kind of go from there.

So we'll see what happens.

Thank you very much.
