TriNutra secures US patent for synergistic black seed oil and astaxanthin blend
Key takeaways
- TriNutra has received a US patent for ThymoQuin black seed oil and astaxanthin combinations, showing synergistic activity.
- TriNutra’s research shows that ThymoQuin and astaxanthin combinations enhance the anti-inflammatory response and antioxidant protection effects.
- The company notes that ThymoQuin alone supports cortisol levels, gut microbiome health, mood, sleep, cardiometabolic health, and antioxidant protection.

TriNutra has received a US patent for compositions that pair its US Pharmacopeia-grade black seed oil, ThymoQuin, with astaxanthin and other biologically active compounds. The patent notes these combinations “demonstrated synergistic biological activity, supporting enhanced efficacy compared to the individual ingredients alone.”
The patent is supported by previous research by the company, demonstrating the pairing’s synergistic effect that TriNutra says potentiates astaxanthin’s balanced inflammatory activity.
According to the company, published clinical research demonstrates that ThymoQuin supports healthy cortisol levels while promoting a balanced, eubiotic gut microbiome.
Moreover, it notes that the ingredient supports better mood and sleep, cardiometabolic health and blood pressure control, a balanced inflammatory response, cellular energy production, and antioxidant protection.
Meanwhile, TriNutra notes that astaxanthin is known for its potential to support a healthy inflammatory response, cognition, cardiovascular health, and mood states.
“ThymoQuin was specifically developed to preserve and optimize the key bioactives found in black seed oil, and our research found that pairing it with astaxanthin resulted in synergistic biological activity, particularly in supporting a balanced inflammatory response and antioxidant protection,” says Morris Zelkha, CEO at TriNutra.
Preserving bioactive compounds
Black seed (Nigella sativa) oil’s key bioactive compounds are thymoquinone and p-cymene, notes TriNutra, which are unstable in the presence of oxidants like free fatty acids, leading to reduced potency and lower oil stability.
Zelkha says ThymoQuin paired with astaxanthin delivers synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The company aimed to develop technologies that standardize, stabilize, and maintain the balance of bioactive compounds in black seed oil. TriNutra notes these work synergistically, which can be enhanced when combined with other ingredients.
ThymoQuin is produced through strict growing, harvesting, and proprietary cold-press manufacturing to preserve this composition of bioactives and free fatty acids, notes TriNutra.
According to Zelkha, the company’s formulation approach demonstrates that the composition of black seed oil’s bioactives matters significantly.
“ThymoQuin has brought innovation to this ancient ingredient with several published clinical trials on its health benefits and composition-dependent efficacy, and numerous global patents back it for its composition, stability, bioavailability, and use. We are incredibly proud of yet another achievement for ThymoQuin and its potential in health and wellness.”
In other developments with TriNutra’s black seed oil, ThymoQuin-OCare was found to support the oral microbiome, teeth, and gingival health in human clinical research.
Moreover, the ingredient obtained health claims in Canada, where manufacturers using the oil in a capsule or softgel can claim it helps to support healthy liver function, cardiovascular health, healthy glucose levels, stress relief, healthy gut microbiota, and moderate general feelings of stress.
