SMA Nutrition has launched The Infant Gut Health Journey, which addresses parents’ needs after finding that 82% of those with children under five often seek online information about babies’ gut health.
The expert-informed guide contains essential information necessary for babies’ first 1,000 days of life, when the gut microbiome is developing. This is a time when feeding choices impact digestion, immunity, and healthy growth as well, says the Nestlé brand.
The guide also contains recipes targeting fiber-rich foods since many parents report feeling pressured and lacking enough information on gut health, leading to worries about constipation and stomach discomfort.
SMA Nutrition finds that 60% of parents of children under five say that they face more pressure than ever before, while 48% claim there is insufficient open conversation or education on infant gut health.

Guideline highlights
The SMA Nutrition guide translates science-based evidence into actionable points. It features insights from Dr. Caroline Childs, lecturer in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Southampton in the UK.
Included in the guide, the “UK’s No. 1” baby and children’s cookery author Annabel Karmel MBE also shares gut-friendly weaning and toddler recipes.
SMA Nutrition’s research has found that 73% of British adults believe that infant gut health is very important to the baby’s overall well-being, leading to parents searching for practical guidance.
Additionally, the majority of the parents (of under-fives) ranked crying and fussiness as the highest of first-year health anxieties, followed by sleep (33%) and feeding (30%).
What parents are asking
A baby’s first 1,000 days are an important window for gut health, as experiences around digestion, food variety, and comfort can shape the developing microbiome.
Childs comments: “A baby’s gut does much more than digest food — it also plays an important role in supporting the immune system. Early life is a key window for the gut microbiome to develop, which is still overlooked, despite its role in supporting good gut health into adulthood.”
“Feeding is one of the most important influences during that time. Parents do not need every scientific detail; they need clear, evidence-based guidance that helps them understand what may support a healthy gut and when to seek professional advice.”
The SMA Nutrition research reveals that parents’ queries are often linked to common first-year experiences. Over a third of them with children under five said their baby experienced constipation (37%), general tummy discomfort (36%), reflux or spitting up (36%), or colic (35%).
These parents often seek advice from health care professionals, close family, baby and nutrition brand websites, and official medical or public health sources.
Ellie Grove, Scientific Development manager at SMA Nutrition, comments: “Parents are asking real questions about their baby’s tummy, from digestion to discomfort. In the first 1,000 days, our role is to translate topics like the gut microbiome and gut-brain connection into clear, useful information they can use day to day.”
Help with weaning
Karmel’s recipes in the guide include Rainbow Veggie Orzo, make-at-home Baby Baked Beans, and a collection of first purées.
“Weaning is an exciting opportunity to help shape a child’s lifelong relationship with food,” says Karmel. “Introducing a wide variety of plant foods and flavors from the very beginning not only encourages adventurous eating but also helps support the development of a diverse, healthy gut microbiome.”
“One of the best things parents can do is offer babies a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables, and my new gut-friendly recipes are a simple way to nourish little tummies.”
SMA Nutrition highlights that the guide was developed to support parents without adding pressure by simplifying and combining expert guidance.
