Petfood Forum 2026: dsm-firmenich to unveil microalgal oil with same omega-3 ratio as fish oil
Key takeaways
- Veramaris O3 Max Pure provides a sustainable, fermented microalgal oil that mirrors the precise 3:2 EPA:DHA ratio typically found in fish oil.
- New research suggests the LB Fermentate HF postbiotic can help dogs manage environmental stress and reduce the spread of Giardia-linked diarrhea.
- The company is introducing taste-focused innovations like Natural Cheddar Cheese Concentrate alongside a more potent, cost-effective version of its omega-3 supplement.

Offering an alternative to fish oil omega-3s, dsm-firmenich has released the world’s first microalgal oil formulated to mirror the same precise 3:2 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 ratio. The ingredient will debut at Petfood Forum 2026 (April 27–29) in Kansas City, US.
Veramaris O3 Max Pure is marketed as a contaminant-free, non-GMO omega-3 solution produced via closed-system microalgae fermentation.
“For today’s pet parents, pet health is personal — it is held to the same standards as their own health,” says George Josef, global director of Business Development, Nutritional Lipids & Alternative Proteins at dsm-firmenich.

“As pet nutrition continues to evolve, our customers are looking for solutions that combine scientific credibility with formulation simplicity and supply security. Veramaris O3 Max Pure reflects that shift — delivering a full-spectrum omega-3 profile in a single, consistent solution that supports both product performance and the planet.”
Next wave in omega-3 science
Veramaris O3 Max Pure’s controlled fermentation process ensures standardized quality, full traceability, and a balanced omega-3 profile within a single solution, according to dsm-firmenich. This enables pet food manufacturers to make accurate on-pack claims.
In addition, the ingredient offers a formulation-friendly, year-round alternative to fish oil. “It delivers a stable supply, predictable costs, and a renewable solution that aligns with both sustainability goals and evolving consumer expectations,” details the supplier.
At Petfood Forum, dsm-firmenich will showcase its broad portfolio of innovations and capabilities, including new scientific evidence on its dual Lactobacillus postbiotic, LB Fermentate HF, which will be presented during a dedicated speaking session focused on dog calming support.
A recent study in adult dogs linked LB Fermentate HF supplementation with significantly reduced heart rate reactivity and a trend toward lower cortisol responses, indicating enhanced physiological resilience to environmental stressors.
Another study in puppies with giardiasis evidences that supplementation with LB Fermentate HF significantly reduces the risk of spreading Giardia and Giardia-linked chronic diarrhea.
Additionally, dsm-firmenich will exhibit upgrades to Veramaris Pets, which now delivers 30% more EPA at no additional cost for enhancing omega-3 performance in pet food formulations.
Demonstrating other tailored solutions, dsm-firmenich will present capabilities from its state-of-the-art, pet-dedicated premix facility in Tonganoxie, Kansas, US, designed to support scalable, customized nutrition solutions for customers in North America.
Booth visitors can also explore the company’s latest taste innovations for pets, including Natural Cheddar Cheese Concentrate, developed to enhance palatability and improve the sensory appeal of pet food products.
Humanization of pet nutrition
The demand for science-backed nutrition continues to rise in line with the “humanization” trend in pet nutrition. As such, dsm-firmenich underscores that pet parents are prioritizing health benefits, ingredient transparency, and sustainability even more when choosing products for their animals.
Omega-3 fatty acids are deemed essential within this shift, with EPA and DHA widely recognized for their role in supporting brain, heart, joint, skin, and coat health, highlights the supplier.
“However, fish oil, the traditional source of these nutrients, faces ongoing challenges, including supply volatility, fluctuating costs, inconsistent EPA:DHA ratios, and sustainability concerns linked to marine sourcing,” states dsm-firmenich.
The company details that pet owners tend to be more eco-conscious than non-pet owners. Its research shows that 70% report actively seeking ways to reduce their environmental footprint, which is driving up demand for responsible sourcing.
