Night and day supplements: NPD tackles sleep and sun protection from within
14 Apr 2021 --- Consumer demand for targeted supplementation is increasingly diversifying and industry is responding with NPD catering to specific needs. NutritionInsight is spotlighting night supplements that focus on improving sleep and day supplements that offer sun protection from within.
Vitamins, minerals and supplements brand Natrol has released Natrol Sleep+, a line of sleep aid gummies with melatonin, which comes in three adult formulas and two for kids – ages four and over.
Meanwhile, Inner Glow Vitamins has launched its multitargeted, anti-aging supplement, which is developed to give the benefits of sunscreen from within.
Improving sleep
An essential part of overall health and well-being is sleep, says Natrol. A healthy sleep routine can boost the mood, improve memory, lower health risks, drive up productivity and strengthen the immune system.
Beyond melatonin, Natrol’s Sleep+ range also features secondary ingredients with immune health, calm and beauty benefits, each formulated to improve sleep. It is touted as providing restful and revitalizing sleep.
“The past year has been filled with a variety of stressors, whether balancing busy work and family activities, adjusting to increased screen time or the dramatic shifts in schedules, our sleep-wake cycles have definitely been affected,” says Harel Shapira, director of product management and innovation for Natrol.
“We know healthy sleep is a key ingredient to our daily wellness routine, so for those who are looking for more nourishing and revitalizing sleep, we’re confident that the new Sleep+ products will provide safe and effective solutions for the entire family.”
Boasting natural ingredients
All of the new Natrol Sleep+ gummies boast a good taste and are 100 percent drug-free, non-GMO, vegetarian and free of gelatin.
Moreover, they are free of synthetic dyes, artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives.
The blends include Natrol Sleep+ Immune Health that supports a healthy immune system and helps toward a “revitalizing sleep” and Natrol Sleep+ Calm, which “calms an active mind and helps the body ease into sleep.”
In addition, the range offers Natrol Sleep+ Beauty that helps consumers get better sleep and wake up looking refreshed and renewed.
Natrol Kids Sleep+ Immune Health supports a child’s healthy immune system and helps them get refreshing sleep. Lastly, Natrol Kids Sleep+ Calm helps calm an active mind and body before bedtime to ease your child to sleep.
Relaxation demands rise
Last month, NutritionInsight reported on how consumers increasingly turn to sleep and relaxation supplements to tackle COVID-19 stress. Experts from PharmaLinea said this market is pegged for further growth in 2021.
Innova Market Insights reports a 21 percent average annual growth rate in launches carrying a brain or mood health claim between 2015 and 2019. In this space, nootropics are having a moment, reflected by an average annual growth of 70 percent in product launches (Global, CAGR 2015 to 2019).
In this space, sleep wellness brand Proper unveiled a family of four sleep-aid supplements and a personalized coaching app to support US consumers’ slumber.
Sun protection from within
The Inner Glow range includes a carefully selected blend of powerful, safe and effective ingredients that bridge the gap between allopathic and naturopathic approaches to skin protection.
Inner Glow was developed and tested by dermatologist Dr. Noreen Galaria in partnership with a plastic surgeon.
Inner Glow is available in two specifically engineered formulas: Age Defense, and Hair/Skin/Nails.
“Inner Glow is the result of our quest to provide high-quality products to follow-up on our patients’ various skin treatments,” says Galaria.
“Rather than give them a list of natural supplements they should be looking for, we developed a proprietary mix that has it all. Every element we use in Inner Glow is scientifically tested and proven to be effective, and no other single product on the market can achieve the results of our supplements.”
“Each ingredient has a long history of use in the industry, but we’ve enhanced their natural utility by adding other elements like polypodium to act as an internal sunscreen. Up to 72 percent of our patients who use Inner Glow have also reported a marked increase in their energy levels due to the purity of our antioxidants,” Galaria explains.
Healthy aging
Inner Glow’s Age Defense is a blend of vitamins and other natural constituents that act as a supercharged, antioxidant fortifier to help compensate for the incomplete protection afforded by most topical sunscreens that must be reapplied over and over again.
Age Defense is touted as slowing the signs of aging from the inside out, using the proven power of antioxidants, both pre and probiotics, as well as a variety of omega 3s.
Inner Glow uses natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These protect the skin by allowing it to repair itself and correct visible damage to retaining a youthful look for longer. Inner Glow contains specific percentages of turmeric, green tea, fish oil, ginger, grape seed extract, and blueberries for maximum effect.
It also involves polypodium and pycnogenol. Polypodium helps prevent damage to skin cells from the constant bombardment of UV sunlight while also improving inflammatory responses to sun exposure.
Pycnogenol is sourced from special tree bark and helps the body generate collagen and hyaluronic acid, protecting skin from UV exposure while also helping to prevent melasma (dark, discolored skin patches).
“The resulting synergy we’ve achieved is far more powerful than taking any one or two of these supplements alone, not to mention how incredibly convenient this is for our patients,” notes Galaria.
NutritionInsight recently spoke to Lycored’s Zev Ziegler, vice president of brand and marketing, who explains that active consumers are looking for supplements that can promote a healthier relationship between their skin and the sun.
Lycoderm, the company’s nutrient complex for skincare supplements, contains concentrations of lycopene, phytoene and phytofluene, as well as carnosic acid and vitamins A and E for skin health and appearance.
