Natural hangover remedy Alcovit set to reach the US market
26 Nov 2020 --- Alcovit, a natural hangover remedy developed in Germany, will soon be heading to the US market with its unique concoction of vitamins and minerals. The powder, which was developed by Frankfurt-based scientists, has been certified in the EU as a medical device.
Alcovit contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D3, E, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, kudzu extract, chlorophyll and mineral silicate.
Mineral silicate, which originates in volcanic rock, is highlighted as the product’s chief remedial ingredient. Silicate binds to alcohol molecules that have not been metabolized by the liver.
Once alcohol has bound to the silicate, its compound diminishes and exits the body through the digestive tract. As a result, Alcovit lowers the body’s overall blood alcohol content.
“It’s not going to magically make anyone completely sober, but it does promise to minimize the side effects of over-imbibing,” says the company.
Studies have shown that alcohol use has risen sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world as has historically shown to be the case during times of crisis.
Public mental health is of major concern due to the isolation caused by lockdowns and rising unemployment.
Supplements that can alleviate the negative effects of alcohol consumption may have a wider and more important place in the market at this time, according to the company.
Alcovit is positioning itself specifically as a “medical breakthrough” for the short term side effects of over-drinking. While the brand does not recommend “a series of unending benders” it mentions the product’s potential to reduce sick days caused by hangovers and encourages consumers to plan their drinking sessions with it.
Fighting hangovers
Alcovit’s impending US launch comes amid a rise in hangover remedies. Previously, a study found plant extracts and antioxidants can significantly reduce the after effects of alcohol in humans.
Last year, Zbiotics developed a product that breaks down acetaldehyde, a byproduct of alcohol associated with hangover pain.
Zeno Functional Foods also proved its protein bar SOBAR can slash alcohol absorption. In an independent clinical trial, the bar was shown to be up to twice as effective in reducing alcohol concentration in comparison with other foods.
