GC Rieber VivoMega switches to no-code AI to streamline platinum-grade omega-3 production
20 Aug 2024 --- Norwegian omega-3 algae oil producer GC Rieber is utilizing Intelecy’s no-code AI to create machine learning models for real-time predictions, which will help prevent disruptions and optimize operations for its VivoMega products.
“With Intelecy’s platform, we can significantly improve our production process and strengthen our environmental initiatives. Previously, we focused on addressing faults as they occurred and took preventive measures based on those time intervals. Now, we have increased focus on predictive maintenance, which enables us to anticipate future issues and address them before they become a concern,” says Torbjørn Saltkjelvik, process optimizer at GC Rieber VivoMega.
The AI platform identifies real-time deviations or anomalies in the company’s processing facilities and provides a cloud-based, centralized data reporting system. By assessing anomalies, GC Rieber VivoMega can proactively plan maintenance and reduce unexpected downtime.
“Combining the extensive knowledge of our plant operators with AI technology, we reduce downtime, mitigate the risks of contamination and ensure the high standards set for our platinum-grade omega-3 oil,” says Saltkjelvik.
Fine-tuning energy efficiency
The AI allows the company to analyze energy consumption in real-time and identify ways to minimize its use throughout operational systems.
For example, GC Rieber VivoMega expends 500,000 kw/h per year of energy waste related to its steam usage, which is equivalent to twenty-two Norwegian households’ yearly electricity use. The energy management team has now set out to reduce this inefficiency.
“This proactive approach enables strategic planning and predictive scheduling of the plant’s downtime, avoiding unexpected shutdowns triggered by high pressure or excessive heat, which boosts efficiency, reliability and sustainability,” Saltkjelvik explains.
“In addition, the cloud-based platform enables our team to monitor and manage our systems from anywhere at any time, which is evermore important as we continue to expand.”
GC Rieber VivoMega has expanded its facility several times, adding a new concentration production facility that delivers high-grade docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) fish oils and, recently, vegan algae EPA and DHA omega-3s.
The company opened its new omega-3 manufacturing facility campus in Norway. The US$75 million expansion will double the company’s output of its high-end triglyceride form of marine omega-3s EPA and DHA and vegan EPA and DHA algal oils.
Seamless production runs
The no-code AI tool creates anomaly detection machine learning models without the need for manual coding. Historical data from successful production runs is fed into the Intelecy platform, enabling the models to learn and understand the patterns of a well-functioning production process.
When a deviation is detected in the real-time production data, an anomaly is generated in the Intelecy platform.

In 2021, GB Rieber VivoMega spotlighted how its omega-3 softgels can help boost consumer sensory experiences. It rolled out a softgel sampling program targeting North American consumers, which was showcased at SupplySide West in the US.
