Expanding prebiotics: Stratum Nutrition gets North American distribution rights for Bimuno
18 Jan 2023 --- A new agreement between dietary supplement ingredient distributor Stratum Nutrition and international biotechnology company Clasado Biosciences gives Stratum the exclusive right to distribute Bimuno – a prebiotic galactooligosaccharide ingredient (GOS) – to the US and Canada.
Clasado develops advanced prebiotic solutions for food, dietary supplements and healthcare companies.
“As gut microbiome health awareness continues to accelerate, we are delighted to announce our exclusive distribution deal with Stratum. Prebiotics are climbing the consumer agenda, with a global compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 15%. With consumer interest in prebiotics accelerating at pace across North America, the future of health and nutrition formulation is an exciting area for microbiome modulating products,” says Dr. Frederic Narbel, VP of B2B sales at Clasado.
“Bimuno GOS stands apart from alternatives through the scientific studies behind it, which forms one of the most comprehensive portfolios on the market as well as approved health claims in select territories.”
A science-backed ingredient
The ingredient is supported by over 100 scientific publications and 20 clinical trials, Clasado claims. The ingredient’s composition enables it to nourish bifidobacteria – a beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Bifidobacteria support many health areas, such as cognitive, immune and gastrointestinal health.
“Versatile, stable and rooted in scientific research, it’s never been easier to formulate the next generation of health and nutrition supplements,” says Narbel.
Clasado argues that the Bimuno GOS stands out from other prebiotic ingredients on the market as it has 25 possible structure and function claims according to its “strong scientific portfolio.”
“Today’s health audience is more proactive than ever before. Consumers worldwide are getting more attuned to the benefits of better gut health, the importance of the gut microbiome and its role in supporting everyday health,” says Micah Osborne, CEO at Stratum.
New age of gut health innovation
Stratum recently spotlighted the benefits of using postbiotics in functional F&B while highlighting sustained commercial interest in prebiotics and probiotics.
“Understanding that beneficial gut bacteria influence non-digestive health in important areas such as immunity and mental health unlocks new paths for product development and presents a fantastic opportunity to meet rising consumer demand,” says Osborne.
“We are in the age of gut health innovation, and the commercial potential of prebiotics is significant. The stability also makes it suitable for many applications, no longer exclusively used in supplements, but increasingly in functional food and beverages.”
Osborne explains that adding Bimuno GOS to Stratum’s ingredient portfolio aligns with the company’s scientific values and allows it to support the customers in formulating their prebiotic product ranges.
In a recent UK and Canada study, the gut microbiome has been referred to as “the black box of nutrition” as diet-microbiome interactions are anticipated to contribute to the foundation of dietary physiological effects.
