Omniactive’s galangal extract with caffeine boosts alertness and lowers fatigue
Key takeaways
- OmniActive’s enXtra galangal extract boosts alertness and reduces fatigue when taken alone or with caffeine in a new study.
- Combining enXtra with caffeine produces the strongest and most sustained mental alertness while avoiding the caffeine crash.
- The 28-day study shows enXtra improves fatigue and alertness for up to five hours with a good safety profile.

OmniActive Health Technologies research has found that enXtra, on its own and when paired with caffeine, significantly improves alertness while helping reduce caffeine-associated rebound effects.
OmniActive’s enXtra is an Alpinia galanga extract, designed to support alertness and sustained mental energy. The company suggests it can be used on its own or to extend the benefits of caffeine-containing products.
“Consumers are looking for options that help them feel alert, focused, and energized without the drawbacks often associated with caffeine alone,” comments Deep Shikha, assistant director of Category Management at OmniActive Health Technologies.
“This study further supports enXtra as a differentiated ingredient that can be used alone or alongside caffeine to deliver sustained mental energy and fatigue support.”
OmniActive explains that the study’s main outcome was improvements in mental alertness, while the secondary outcomes were fatigue, psychomotor performance, sustained attention, and safety parameters.
Combination effects
The Journal of Clinical Trials study examined the efficacy and safety of enXtra, caffeine, and their combined effects. Participants were all healthy adults ages 18–40 who were sleep-restricted. They were all also habitual caffeine consumers.
The researchers give participants four kinds of doses: 300 mg of enXtra, 200 mg of caffeine, a combination of 300 mg enXtra and 200 mg caffeine, or placebo.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved two stages. The first was an acute single-dose crossover design with 128 participants. The second was a 28-day sub-acute parallel design with 127 participants.
The researchers note that enXtra had statistically significant improvements in alertness compared to placebo across both stages. But combining enXtra and caffeine had the strongest benefit for sustained mental alertness. The combination also aided participants in avoiding the “caffeine crash” associated with caffeine alone.
Additionally, enXtra resulted in participants’ fatigue reduction. But with caffeine, these effects were longer-lasting.
enXtra galangal extract delivers sustained alertness without a caffeine crash.“These findings reinforce enXtra’s role as a clinically supported solution for today’s individuals interested in energy and cognitive performance,” says Shikha.
Sustained improvements
The research team carried out cognitive assessments at baseline and after participants consumed their dosage in controlled environments at one, three, and five hours during study visits.
At one hour post-dose in the subacute phase, caffeine showed improvements in alertness and fatigue, OmniActive reveals. However, these effects were not sustained at three or five hours. Meanwhile, enXtra alone and in combination with caffeine had significant and sustained improvements in mental alertness and fatigue reduction.
The company adds that enXtra interventions have a good safety profile as cognitive enhancers in healthy adults.
“Energy remains one of the most dynamic categories in dietary supplements, but the next generation of products must go beyond stimulation,” says Abhijeet Morde, VP of Early Discovery & Translation Science.
“enXtra’s science gives formulators a clinically studied ingredient that supports mental alertness, fatigue reduction, and sustained performance, with broad potential across energy, focus, active nutrition, and everyday wellness applications.”
