Amid growing innovations in magnesium bioavailability, AstaReal AB has launched a new supplement, Magnesium Total by Astaxin. The product contains a mix of magnesium forms in a vegetable capsule and complements AstaReal AB’s Astaxin products with astaxanthin.
The company notes that magnesium plays a vital role in energy metabolism and normal physiological function. As an essential mineral, it must be obtained through diet.
“With this launch, we are taking the next step in expanding our range of dietary supplements,” says Annelie Gunnarsson, brand manager at AstaReal AB.
“We have chosen to formulate Magnesium Total by Astaxin with three high-quality forms of magnesium: magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium taurate, and magnesium malate. The product has high bioavailability, meaning the body can more easily absorb and utilize the mineral.”

AstaReal AB says its “by Astaxin” range complements its existing Astaxin products with astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment with antioxidant properties. The product line also includes the recently launched vegan vitamin D3+K for bone, muscle, and immune health.
Magnesium innovations
Although food offers a good source of magnesium, especially meat, fish, legumes, leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains, AstaReal AB underscores that some population groups struggle to meet their daily intake requirements for the mineral.
The company notes that magnesium plays a key role in synthesizing and using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in cells’ mitochondria. Moreover, it helps regulate ion channels, which are key for nerve cell function, muscle contraction, and heart rhythm.
Magnesium is becoming an increasingly popular mineral in supplements, linked to various health benefits, such as mood, relaxation, sleep, and brain health. Recent years have seen a range of new product launches, with a strong focus on improving the bioavailability of this mineral while addressing its gastrointestinal side effects.
For example, at SupplySide Global 2025, Jungbunzlauer introduced a fully-reacted magnesium bisglycinate, engineered for optimal absorption and superior tolerability. The company spotlighted a growing global consumer interest in incorporating the mineral into their daily routines.
Meanwhile, Sirio Pharma launched a new magnesium portfolio at last year’s CPHI trade show, with multiple dosage forms like softgels, gummies, and fizzy formats. Also at this event, Dr. Paul Lohmann highlighted its LomaChelateX Magnesium Bisglycinate, a high-bioavailability version of the mineral that remains stable and gentle in complex formulations.
ThreoTech’s brain-targeting magnesium L-threonate Magtein has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier to rejuvenate aging pathways. The patented magnesium source has been cleared as a novel food in both the EU and UK, and has been approved as generally recognized as safe in the US.
