- The company says the move strengthens its broader sustainability strategy, which also includes recycling improvements and responsible sourcing across its value chain.

Aker BioMarine has announced a step in its operational sustainability and responsible energy sourcing by signing a 24/7 renewable energy agreement with Engie, which will deliver 100% renewable energy to the Norwegian marine-based ingredient developer’s production sites.
The omega-3 supplier says this 24/7 approach matches electricity consumption with local renewable energy generation, and compared to traditional renewable procurement, it provides “around-the-clock” and site-specific clean energy on an hourly basis.
“Working with companies that have made sustainability a core part of their strategy is essential to delivering meaningful progress,” says Taymur Bunkheila, regional VP and Retail Supply lead for Engie’s US 24/7 product.
“By aligning energy solutions with operational needs, we can help organizations improve transparency, strengthen accountability, and deliver measurable outcomes. This agreement demonstrates how companies can take practical steps today while building toward long-term sustainability objectives.”
Advancing sustainability efforts
The new agreement builds on Aker BioMarine’s broader sustainability strategy.
The new agreement builds on Aker BioMarine’s broader sustainability strategy.Later this year, the company says it will improve its recycling efficiency, similar to its 100% recycling rate for large bags used in production at its Houston, US, facility.
The new agreement also integrates energy accountability into the Norwegian company’s day-to-day operations, as it is taking a value-chain approach to reducing emissions.
“Through this agreement, we expect to reduce our Scope 2 emissions, marking an important milestone in our broader sustainability journey,” says Matts Johansen, CEO at Aker BioMarine.
“Engie has delivered an affordable, innovative, and transparent solution that allows us to match our electricity consumption for our Houston manufacturing facility with renewable power generation. The transparent data Engie provides strengthens our climate reporting while helping us continue delivering high-quality products with a lower environmental footprint.”
At this year’s Expo West, Nutrition Insight spoke with Jaroslava Juricova-Olsen, chief marketing officer of Human Health Ingredients at Aker BioMarine, about the company’s sustainability initiatives and innovation strategy, moving beyond krill oil ingredients, and new health benefits.
She told us that as the global leader in krill oil, Aker BioMarine has embedded sustainability into its DNA from day one, treating it as both a responsibility and a strategic growth driver.
“The company differentiates itself through premium, sustainably sourced krill harvested from a Marine Stewardship Council-certified fishery and aligned with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, enabling B2B partners to offer scientifically validated, responsibly harvested ingredients to increasingly conscious consumers.”
