At Vitafoods Europe 2025, we dove deep into what makes Threotech’s Magtein magnesium L-threonate a standout ingredient in brain health with Laurentia Guesman, the company’s director of brand management, and Rafea Naffa, its R&D director. The two explained the ingredient’s unique bioavailability and how it specifically supports cognition and mood. They also emphasized Magtein’s robust clinical evidence for cognitive benefits and why magnesium L-threonate is a breakthrough for targeted brain magnesium delivery.
Hello everybody, this is William Bradford Nichols, the editor for Nutrition Insight, and I am here live at Vita Food Europe in Barcelona, Spain, and today we are talking with Laurentia Gustman, the director of brand managers at Turotech.
Triotech.
Hello Laurentia, how are you today?
Good, how are you?
Great.
And we also have Rafael Nafa, the R&D director for 30 Tech.
How are you doing today, sir?
I'm all good.
All right, I have some questions for you guys, and if it's OK, I'd love to just dive right in.
Let's get it.
Can you tell us a little bit about what sets magtine apart in terms of brain bioavailability, and how does your magnesium L308 specifically support cognition and mood?
This is great.
I'll take this here.
So magtin is a magnesium L38, which is a patented salt that has been developed 15 years ago by Stanford and MIT University.
When they've been doing a cutting edge research on fundamental understanding of the brain neurons, and they have developed the Magtin which has shown it can deliver magnesium effectively into the brain, elevating the magnesium levels in the brain, which has caused measurable structural changes, improved the brain blast.
Which has significantly improved learning, short and long term memory, and sleep in different models.
Can you also elaborate a little bit on the clinical evidence that backs magtine's benefits and tell us what makes a 308 so exciting for brain targeted magnesium delivery.
Sure, now after the research was done by Stanford and MIT on many models, the have started moving to testing the Mactin on humans by running several human clinical studies.
The first clinical study was conducted in 2016 where we have measured the executive function of the brain after consuming magin for 12 weeks, which has significantly improved the brain functions.
Including several executive functions, and the other findings in this study was based on the assessment that they have used, which is a cognitive assessment which is standardized to the age.
They have basically measured an improvement in the brain age in the participants by 9 years, and this has shown that Magin not only supported the cognitive.
Health, it just supported healthy brain aging.
After that, there are a couple of human clinical studies, including another study in 2022 which focused on fear and anxiety and another study on cognitive health as , which include paitic memory, associative memory, learning, which has shown significant improvement in the population after.
Only 30 days and in 2024 we had another study on sleep where there was a significant improvement in the deep sleep and the REM sleep as , and those are only a few of the human clinical studies that we were done on Mac 10.
What's interesting about the sleep study is that it was actually using the Auraing, which is really kind of bio tracking and a really cool way to be able.
Assess the deep sleep, the groucchiness, you know, waking up feeling refreshed, and so it was a great way, not just via questionnaires, but actual numerical data.
Oh wow.
Can you also tell us a little bit about how Magtine addresses sort of common issues like gut discomfort?
Yes, absolutely.
So what's great about Magtine is that it's so bioavailable and actually is being taken up through the blood-brain barrier pretty rapidly.
You're not going to get those digestive discomforts.
You may.
With other magnesium salts that will really happen when they're not digested and absorbed properly, and they'll gather water into the gut and can cause gut issues.
And so that's something that we're really proud of is that you know we know our product works, we know it's effective, and you're not going to have those GI troubles from taking it.
Looking at sort of the bioavailability, then, what would be the sort of ideal dosage to achieve cognitive and sleep benefits?
Yes, so our clinical studies, you know, we want our partners to Use the clinical studies in their formulations.
We want everyone that uses Magtine to be able to feel the effect.
And so our brands for products like sleep, focus, and productivity will use the clinical dose at 1 g.
And for memory, cognition, and brain health, they'd be using 2 g a day.
Something I'd like to add here, thank you, Laurencia.
This is really great about the Magin.
Something really customers come to us and ask about the dose because something like.
Magtin provides around 7% of elemental magnesium, which for the 2 g it's around 145 mg of elemental magnesium, which is almost half, just below half of the daily recommended dose.
But we can tell them you don't need more magnesium.
You need only more magnesium that effective magnesium with the right efficacy, because the magnesium, the more magnesium you get in your body.
Scientifically proven it's going to put a burden on your kidney, so never good to have more magnesium.
Somectin has this very precise ratio between magnesium that is bound to L38, has really high stability for temperature and pH, which makes it very suitable for a wide range of applications and makes it very.
Available at this, I would say, dose of the elemental magnesium.
That's a great lead in to my next question.
Can you tell us what product formats have shown the most promise, and are there any new sort of functional formats in development with magtin?
Yes, absolutely.
So when we started marketing magtine over 10 years ago in the US, a lot of the supplement companies just wanted to focus on a single ingredient.
With magine and that's fine.
That was typically done in capsules, but what we're seeing now is that so many companies want something a little bit more.
They want innovation whether that's in product combinations or delivery systems, so something like, you know, a soft chew, a stick pack, powder sachets, functional beverages and foods because magtine is water soluble and has a really neutral taste.
Profile, it's awesome to put in other products.
For me personally, I like taking it in a powder format with maybe some electrolytes in the afternoon when your brain is hydrated, you're feeling better, get some magnesium in there as , and it really just helps power through the rest of the day.
And for me, actually, I'm taking magin in a different way.
I take the recommended dose, but I try to break it down into 2 or 3 daily dosages during the day.
I take 1 g in the morning when I wake up, I take another 1 g before going to the bed, and this scientifically can help you to maintain the magnesium level in your blood, the magnesium level hopefully in your brain as during the day.
And worth to mention just to follow up to what you said, Laurencia, about the food, I think we are already both approved for grass and novel food which allows the customer.
To use it, right?
Exactly, yeah.
Having the grass, the FDA grass generally recognized as safe for food and supplements, as as the novel food approval in Europe, really helps our customers be able to innovate from the beginning and really give a range of flexibility for some unique formulations in the market and some exciting dosage forms.
That's great.
Can you tell us what can we expect from you guys in the future?
It's really interesting.
I can touch on the R&D because something we needed to know that Mac10 really we invest really big into both R&D and sales and marketing.
So for R&D we're looking for the next 20 years.
I can tell you.
So we have very exciting projects whether including more human clinical studies for cognitive health, sleep, crossing again the blood-brain barrier, just ensuring Understanding the mechanistics behind it.
Although we have a really great science, but we will never stop in order to ensure high safety, high efficacy, and just basically prove those amazing benefits that has.
I think I'll leave Russia to talk to the marketing themselves.
Absolutely.
So now that we've secured the EFSA novel food approval in November, we're really looking at continuing global expansion, so working on.
On territories such as Brazil, Australia, other APAC regions, we're really here to make Magtine a household name, to get everyone to increase their magnesium levels in their body, really getting everyone to feel their best.
And so this is a global initiative for us and we're really excited to partner.
All right, Dr.
Nafa, thank you so much for talking to us today, sharing your insights, and we look forward to hearing much more from you guys in the future.
Awesome, thanks everyone.
Thank you very much.
