Vitafoods Europe 2024: Givaudan reveals new clinical research on Pacran’s urinary tract health benefits

06 Jun 2024 | Givaudan

Dan Souza, global product manager for branded ingredients at Givaudan, detailed the latest clinical trial results supporting the efficacy and reliability of Pacran, the company’s cranberry ingredient for urinary tract health. The research confirmed earlier findings, revealing that 500 mg of Pacran daily could reduce recurrent urinary tract infections and improve other urinary tract health indicators. Souza also indicated upcoming studies in different health areas, such as mind and energy, physical health, gut health and intimate health.

This is Yolande van Gaal from Nutrition Insights.

I'm here at Vita Foods Europe 2024 with Dan, who is a global product manager for branded ingredients at Gaudin.

Thank you for joining us today.

Thank you.

And I understand there's some new research about Pack brand, but I'd love to hear.

What is Pakran and what is different about the products?

Sure, yeah, so Patran is a cranberry ingredient that's really been purpose built from the ground up from the beginning to help support a healthy urinary tract.

We try to think about the consumer when we build our ingredients and we say, what does the consumer want?

And I think what the consumer wants is to go into the store or go online and find an ingredient that's going to help them achieve a healthy urinary tract.

So we looked at how can we do that the best and we what our research showed us was it wasn't really about delivering the maximum amount of actives and in the cranberry world actives are called proanthocyanidins or packs we saw that there's a lot of literature behind that but there's not a lot of.

Succinct, strong literature to say that's the way to go.

What we saw was a full spectrum whole berry solution was a really, a really a good way to go.

We did a lot of science to support that.

We have multiple clinical studies on the ingredient to show that it actually works to help support urinary tract health.

Our science is so strong that we've actually been awarded health claims from 4 different government jurisdictions.

So we built it from the ground up to achieve, you know, urinary tract health, and we've got health claims to back it up.

And you're of course you're launching or announcing some new research outcomes at this show.

What can you tell us about the latest research on Packgram?

Yeah, we're thrilled with the latest research.

It took us a long time to get there with COVID trying to conduct a clinical trial, right?

There was delays, but in the end it was really worth it.

So what we really did is we, we wanted to repeat what we had done in the past, but we wanted to do it at a different site with different researchers with a different population of people, but the same core.

Inclusion criteria.

We want to have women that had recurrent UTIs in their history.

We want to see if they took 500 mg of Pacran daily, if we could reduce the recurrence of urinary tract infections.

We showed that about 10 years ago with our Vostalova study that's published.

And then this recent study that we did, which will hopefully be published in a few, maybe 6, 10 weeks or something like that, we'll have it published or at least submitted for publication.

We were able to repeat that data.

We showed that we were able to reduce recurrent UTIs at a similar rate and and actually had some other benefits in in supporting time to first UTI, average number of UTI symptoms reduction, so really strong data, really pleased with it.

Awesome.

And what can you tell us about how Goda is planning to leverage the outcomes of this latest research?

So first and foremost, we want to supply this research as fast as possible to our branded partners that are out there using Pacgran today and give them the advantage in the marketplace and give them the ability to communicate more.

Strongly if possible the benefits of PACR and then we're always looking at ways where we can increase our visibility and get additional claims or additional marketing benefits that we can we can go after so we're always looking at ways to maybe petition different governments for additional claims as.

Awesome.

And just looking a bit more broadly because I know that science plays a big part in.

What can you tell us about other new research areas or studies that are coming up or that you're excited about?

Absolutely.

So I'm the global product manager for branded ingredients and we really focus on a couple of different health benefit areas mind and.

Energy, gut and immunity, physical health, and then intimate health and intimate health will be like men's and women's health, and we have a clinical program underway in each one of those health benefit spaces.

So for instance, in the mind and energy space we're looking at sleep and relax as possible outcome for one of our botanicals and the.

Physical health space, excuse me, in the physical health space we're looking at joint health and we have many other clinicals underway within the program.

So over the next year or so you'll see we'll be announcing the results of different health benefits from those four categories.
