SupplySide Global 2025: BGG showcases apple extract & astaxanthin concepts for weight management and skin health
11 Nov 2025 | BGG
BGG exhibited its two star ingredients, ApplePhenon apple extract and AstaZine astaxanthin, at SupplySide Global. Concepts included an apple drinking yogurt for weight management and skin health, and an AstaZine coffee showcased the ingredient's powerful antioxidant benefits and versatile applications across food, beverage, and beauty. Tamara Higgins, managing director for Americas and Lixin Ding, R&D director at BGG, told us more.
This is Elizabeth Green reporting for Nutrition Insight.
I'm here in Las Vegas at Supply Side Global.
I'm with Tammy Higgins, who is the managing director at BGG and Li Xing Ding, who's the R&D director for research at BGG.
Welcome guys, thank you for joining me.
Firstly, what is the importance of bringing and showcasing your ingredients, to Supply Side Global?
Thanks Elizabeth.
We really see supply.
Global as the primary show to highlight and see where where the ingredients are going in the industry, what's happening relative to the nutrispace, as as functional foods and beverages.
So our goal is to one absorb what's happening from an innovation perspective, as as to see where we can connect and create value and support growth within the nutra and function.
Food and beverage Fantastic.
And there are two areas that you're sort of highlighting here at supply side global, right?
Those are weight management and skin health.
Why are these such key trends, Tammy?
I'll ask you that question as , if that's OK.
Sure, we really look at the trends from an emotional level.
We like to connect with what does beauty mean for each person on an individual level.
So we're focusing on our Apple phenom.
As a way to help some gender specific and age-specific kind of challenges that might be in the market today around weight management and how that connects to a beauty space for each individual, whether you're a woman and you're menopause or perimenopause age or whether you're a man who's like really into fitness.
So we're looking at it from that perspective and with our Astaxanthin.
Design again it's about looking at things from an emotional level and how we can connect with the value of azanthin as one of the most potent antioxidants available in the industry.
OK, perfect.
Thank you very much, Liin.
I'll come to you next.
What can you tell us about how BGG's clinical studies back these benefits that support weight management and skin health for your ingredient portfolio?
OK, as just mentioned.
Our apophenia is actually focused on the metabolic syndrome, and we have several studies supporting from the three key pillar aspects around metabolic syndromes, including the cardiovascular, blood sugar, and weight management, more specifically the visceral fat reduction.
We Have 4 high quality human studies, all of which were randomized double blind placebo controlled, and the study shows that aquaphenone actually can possessing with a unique phytochemistry profile, apophenol can have the synergistic effect.
In terms of the regulation of the blood sugar and also the cholesterol fat reduction and as as cholesterol reduction, so we see this hypophenol as kind of the more natural and healthy environments to while keeping still a healthy diet and.
But without too much change, but still can give benefits to manage your weight.
So we see it can be a good compliment to right now some other weight management or some other programs like programs because you don't need to change your lifestyle too much and also you don't have those bounce back.
In fact, after you stop taking it, for example, if you stop taking the GLP related products, basically you can, you know, bounce back.
OK, fantastic.
Let's talk about the astazine astaxanthin as a natural antioxidant and how this might enhance beverage formulations or different formulations for that matter, such as coffee and yogur.
What can you tell us about that?
It was known as the strongest natural antioxidant so far.
It is originally from macrology, what we call hematococcus glialis.
It has been studied to possess a wide range of benefits and also more specifically, our focus is on skincare because it is.
Strong UV protector for human beings with its high antioxidant capability.
Aidansin itself is a hydrophobic molecule, so there are some challenges when you formulate into a product.
So to overcome that, we developed a micro-encapsulated a product so it can form a.
Continuous dispersion in water which expands its patience in addition to traditional supplements, dosing formats.
So now you can use this microcapsule powder into shakes, powdered drinks or shades, and of course yogurt, which we are demonstrating today.
Nice.
What are the key advantages?
We've touched on this a little.
Of incorporating both these ingredients into functional foods and supplements, how in your opinion can manufacturers leverage these ingredients in the best way in their formulations?
I think for application, the good thing about these two ingredients is they are both very easy to work with in terms of the delivery formats.
Apophenol is a good high soluble powder.
With a very, characteristic, mild apple fragrance and it is very stable to heat, light, and acidity, so, and, , as as design, as I just mentioned, we were able to convert it to from like a water insoluble to water disposable which actually helps the formulas.
To use it in the product and plus this micro encapsulation also improves the stability of the product to avoid degradation during the process, conditions like heat or light exposure for a longer time.
And the other benefit specifically with the ataxanthin and a lot of typical astaxanthins you get like a a.
Algae type flavor, right?
Especially at the levels that you want to add 4 to 6 mg within our micro encapsulated, you can use it at the potent level that you need for the functional benefit, and it's not going to contribute to those micro, those microalgae nodes that have a typical kind of offensive aroma or flavor.
OK, thank you.
Thank you very much, guys.
Very interesting.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
