FiE: A glimpse into Nutek’s clean label solutions and future strategies

At FiE 2023, in Frankfurt, Germany, we spoke with Barry Knudson, Nutek Natural Ingredients’ COO, and Scott Keys, the company’s VP of sales, about its clean label salt reduction, preservative and texture solutions, including NuSavor, NuForm and NuXtend. We also discussed the company’s focus and strategies for 2024.

Hello everybody, this is William Bradford Nichols, the editor of Nutrition Insight, and I am here live at Food Ingredients Europe, Frankfurt, Germany, speaking with Barry Knudsen, the chief operating officer of Nuch Natural Ingredients.

Hello sir, how are you today?

Very good, thanks.

And Scott, he is the vice president of sales at Ntech Natural Ingredients.

How are you today, sir?

Doing , thank you.

It seems like you guys have some.

Exciting solutions to tell us about today.

So can you tell me a little bit about the products that you're spotlighting at this year's trade show?

Yes, absolutely.

So New Tech Natural ingredients.

We're a clean label ingredient manufacturer really designed around health and wellness and consumer friendly labels.

So some of the solutions we're showcasing this year are natural salt solutions, which help to lower sodium to really prevent cardiovascular disease.

In countries with regulations such as in the EU with Nutriscore, also our natural flavor solution, NuSaver, which is based off of fermentation technology, and then our new extend clean label mold shelf life extension mold inhibition solution and also geared off for fermentation.

Can you tell me a little bit about sort of the health and nutritional benefits that.

Of the health benefits as I mentioned about the salt solutions are about lowering cardiovascular disease or hypertension within our population due to overconsumption of sodium, and the health benefits of NuSavor and Nu Extent really are about clean label awareness, removing synthesized ingredients from the food supply, and replacing those with more natural solutions based off of natural production.

Salt replacement solution here, right, or 35% replacement.

This is one of our products, 35% reduction.

It's really intended to be a complete replacement just to take out your bottle of salt at home and replace it with this.

If you want to do it with baking or whatever, you just again don't use any of the sodium, replace it with this, and you'll get about a 30 to 35% reduction.

We offer a full line of various reduction obviously for the B2B business.

As as then obviously consumer facing products such as this available at Amazon.com.

Can you, can you tell me a little bit about the markets and trends that your products speak to?

Yeah, so the markets really as we look at globally, the markets that we speak to are on sodium reduction or any any region of the world where they're facing challenges from regulation due to front of pack labeling for sodium.

Part of the country or part of the world rather where they're looking for clean label trends as I mentioned MSG replacement or MSG alternatives, really new product development from the ground up with clean label and then as we look at, you know, better for the environment type of production, ESG, manufacturers and their commitments to the consumer around health and wellness and just reducing the carbon footprint through manufacturing is really where our ingredients play.

Gentlemen, what can we expect from the company in 2024?

You know, I'll let you talk to me a little more specifically, but we've got some exciting things coming out in the texture, business, as as in our flavor business.

Again, we continue to innovate.

That's, in our DNA, and then shows like this really, provide us a great venue to, to interact with, all of our customers, around the, around the industry, so.

It's been a great, great show for us, and you may have a few things you want to add.

Yes, so as we talk about things that are coming in the pipeline for us, a new form, which is a new product for us, which is a texture solution, as I mentioned, ESG and kind of upcycling.

It's a product made from tamarind seed, so it's a tamarind seed gum, really is a hydrocoloid designed to be alternatives to currant gums, anthan gum, locust.

But it's an upcycled ingredient, so it's it's made from a side stream of a product, so it enhances waste streams.

And then also news saver rather, we have new variations coming out of the market as we look at other forms of fermentation and substrates to ferment.

There's other flavor profiles we're going to be bringing onto the market with that as , so it's going to be an exciting year.
