Epax close to 100% circular for its marine biomaterials

03 Aug 2023 | Epax

Sarah Christianslund, product marketing manager at Epax, highlights the company’s new distillation technology, EQP+Tech, which helps the company improve its circularity and lowers its impact on the environment by improving the purity and concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. In Epax’s first ESG report, it scored a 97% on circularity. The company recently launched an omega 11 acid, with promising results in skin health.

Hello everybody, this is William Bradford Nichols reporting for Nutrition Insight, and today I'm talking to Sarah Christiansen from the product, product marketing manager from EA.

Hello Sarah, how are you today?

I'm good, thanks.

How are you today?

Great.

I'd like to ask you first, can you tell us a little bit about what EPA is featuring and what the main focuses you have at Vita Foods are this year?

I can.

So one of the biggest launches for us this year has been one of our new production technology.

Which is basically, the next generation of insulation for fish oil.

So it's something we started working on back in 2019.

So we've been doing upgrades in our facility over the past 34 years, and we've achieved fantastic results with regards to, to the ability to.

Distill, EPA DHA even further and to, make sure that our circularity is very good, that we can really utilize the byproducts, and also that all our production is low impact on the environment.

So yeah, we're quite happy with that and it's launching a new logo on everything that our customers can use.

That's great.

I understand that you have some pretty exciting news regarding your sustainability practices coming up.

Can you talk to us about that as?

Yes, so we, we've always worked a lot with sustainability, obviously since we work in fish, and we first launched our environmental stewardship program I say probably 15 years ago, EPEC bition.

Since then, the world has changed a lot.

Fortunately, it's a lot more focused on, on sustainability and, and, good practice.

So now the, the new way of recording is really ESG.

So that's why we've done a lot of changes to how we record as.

So we're very happy now to launch our first official ESG report for 2022.

One of the things we focus on there is circularity.

When you look at the circularity gap in the world, globally, it's around, most companies are only around 7% circular.

At Apex, we've managed to achieve 96.7%.

So I'm very happy with that.

We're not content though.

We keep working on it, keep chipping away, and.

Yeah, we've also massively reduced our CO2 footprint and and our dependence on using fuel.

So it's a lot of exciting stuff happening for us now in the field of ESG as.

So we're very happy with that.

Obviously, all our, all the fish we we take in has been third party verified for sustainability as , and 100% usage of the fish.

That's amazing, incredible news and exciting.

And can you tell us about your most recent product innovation as?

Yeah, we have a new category.

We've always worked in omega 3, but now it's, it's exploring, other lipids as.

So we've, named the category Eex known as lipid, and we did our first launch a few months ago.

A product called Eex keto 10, which is a ketoleic acid, omega 11.

That is an LC move, you know, usually with the omega-3s it's a long chain, so it's it's a very different area for us, which we're supporting with scientific verification and we've seen very, very promising results in in skin health.

So that's, that opens up a new new area for us as , so very exciting.
