Bioiberica: Expanding from pharma to targeted nutraceuticals in 50-year history

20 Jun 2025 | Bioiberica

At Bioiberica’s leading manufacturing site in Palafolls, Spain, we meet with the company’s marketing and communications director, Antonio Vendrell, to explore its expansion from pharmaceuticals into nutraceutical solutions for digestion, mobility, and skin health. The company will continue to explore research and innovations in these categories. Vendrell notes that the healthy aging trend boosts demand for muscle strength and mobility solutions, while teasing new ingredients and applications in skin health.

This is Yolanda from Althematician Insight.

I'm here at Bioerica with Antonio Vendrell, who is the company's marketing and communications director.

As we note, this year, Biobilia exists over 50 years exactly.

And I know one big thing that we've already been talking about today was going from farm and extending into nutraceuticals.

Can you talk a little bit about how that went down or why that decision was taken?

Yes, yes, , first of all, we are celebrating our 50th anniversary and, interestingly enough, the spot where we created the first ingredient and product in this company is just a few meters away from here.

And that's a very iconic place because we are in Pala Falls in the main site and that's where we produce our most of our portfolio.

So the origin of the company was the the production of heparin and that clearly.

Marked a way of doing things and marked a way of developing the business.

Since then we've been developing a pharma portfolio, but at the same time we have also been developing the non-pharma portfolio, so dietary supplements, nutra Celtics, either for complement the nutrition of a healthy person.

As specifically as a nutraceutical or in the functional food, so, ingredient products that you can buy at the supermarket and they include some functional ingredients.

So basically what happens, what happens here is that we're always talking about human health, pharma and non-pharma, but with the same we call it glasses.

So even if it's not a pharmaceutical, we deal with nutraceutical category using the pharm the pharma glasses.

That means we provide higher standards in terms of science.

It is key.

Science defines very much this company and defines everything we do and it's behind our functional ingredients.

Then it's also very important, the highest standards and quality.

Again, through the whole production process, through the whole process from the beginning until the end, quality is very important and relevant, and that's what we comply and then once you have science and quality, the rest, it's about having the whole thing together and provided with higher standards in terms of regulatory compliance and clear communication that has been supported and very objective with clear results.

Interesting.

And can you talk a little bit about how Bioinica has been developing its nutraceutical sector, but also where you still want to go in the future?

Yeah, we are currently in, 3 main categories.

One is mobility, and we have 2 ingredients in mobility.

One is coloban and 2, the other one is Mobile.

Mobile, it's for joint and also for muscle.

Then we have another category that it's a skin and beauty, and it's the brand is their Mal.

And then we have another category which is digestive, and the brand is digest.

One thing I like to highlight on the ingredients is the low dose that you need or you require as a daily intake.

So for example, with colobo it's 40 mg a day, with Mogli it's 80 mg a day, with Darmal it's 60 mg a day, and with DJ is 4.2.

So being this the basement, when we look at the future, we do see new developments on the mobility area, particularly on mobility and muscle.

Muscle strength is big and muscle power is a big element right now and a big tendency on the consumer side for healthy aging, for some women's health.

So that is something that we see a lot of opportunity and development in the future on the dermatology side also.

So, let's say Dmal has specific properties and will develop new property, new properties with new science and also we are working on a future pipeline and basic research on the dermatology area that will provide probably new ingredients so mobility and dermatology are key for the future.

Interesting.

And we already talked a bit about how collaboration with other industry stakeholders and universities and research centers is very important to B.

Is there something you can share about either state now or what you're looking for in the future in that side?

Yes.

We do think we know what we manage and what we do, but at the same time, a lot of things that we do will not be possible without understanding and partnering with with external collaborators, external providers, external customers, organizations, etc.

So our future will be around being very transparent and loyal to what we have been doing so far.

An example of that is the recent certification that we got as neutral Strong in the collagen industry.

So we are the first collagen certified under Nutra Strong.

Nutra Strong is a certification that.

Provides objective standard standards on quality and and science sustension.

So this is the type of development that we see in the future collaborating with different stakeholders and companies on developing at the same time on certifying that what we market has higher standards.
