Functional biotics go mainstream: Inside the new era of gut health innovation

From plant-based chicory root fibers to precision-designed probiotics and synbiotic breakthroughs, industry leaders reveal what makes an ingredient a “gut health champion.” Backed by gold-standard trials, these solutions go beyond digestion, targeting immunity, cognition, hormones, and overall well-being. 

Nutrition Insight speaks to ADM, Beneo, dsm-firmenich, and Kaneka Probiotics to learn about the science behind the innovations. 

Beneo defines gut health champions as ingredients that support a healthy microbiota and gut health, which are proven through human intervention studies.

“Beneo’s chicory root fibers, Orafti Inulin and Oligofructose, are scientifically proven to support digestive health and comply with the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics definition of prebiotics,” says Dr. Stephan Theis, head of Nutrition Science and Communication at Beneo.

“As the only plant-based prebiotics, they have been shown to support a healthy microbiota and the selective increase in beneficial Bifidobacteria in more than 50 human intervention studies.”

He also highlights that these inulin-type fructans are natural, non-GMO, and clean label. The fibers are extracted through a gentle hot water method, unlike some others that are artificially or chemically made.

“They can be used in a wide range of food and beverage applications, including baby food, according to national legislation,” adds Theis. 

Echoing the need for ingredients’ validated efficacy, Jordi Riera, chief business officer at Kaneka Probiotics, explains how R&D can be taken one step further. “Not only do we ensure our probiotic strains and blends are supported by gold-standard clinical trials, demonstrating what gut health benefits they provide — we also dive into the how.”

Riera highlights that the KABP Intensive G.I., which includes Pediococcus acidilactici KABP-021, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KABP-022, and KABP-023, was chosen for their role in supporting healthy inflammation and microbe balance.

To dsm-firmenich, gut health champions must support the entire gut, rather than targeting one aspect, says Sonja Kleinke, associate director of Global Marketing, Dietary Supplements.

New science on synbiotics

Kleinke emphasizes that the gut microbiome is revolutionizing the understanding of human health and its role in regulating inflammation, brain function, immunity, and metabolic health. He notes three studies showing how nutrition approaches can support wellness through the gut.

“A randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine demonstrated that combining synbiotics with microencapsulated butyrate can relieve IBS symptoms in just four weeks, offering a new safe, fast, and effective pathway for managing gastrointestinal symptoms.” 

“Meanwhile, breakthrough research in the European Journal of Nutrition showed daily synbiotic supplementation significantly reduced post-exercise malaise and enhanced brain metabolites in adults with chronic fatigue syndrome, marking a potential breakthrough in nutritional support for consumers looking for a non-medical solution,” she points out.

Additionally, a study on neurodevelopmental health, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, found synbiotics and gut-directed hypnotherapy significantly reduced gastrointestinal discomfort, irritability, and anxiety in autistic children. It showed a new insight into the microbiome-gut-brain axis and its role in autism.

New probiotics target menopause hormone balance and heart health via the gut-liver axis.“All this new evidence is driving demand for gut-targeted solutions that address root causes rather than just symptoms,” adds Kleinke.

Liver and hormonal connections to gut

Riera says Kaneka Probiotics was the first to market a cardiometabolic probiotic targeting a lesser-known, but equally important, gut-liver axis.

“Knowing that the gut microbiome is involved in regulating lipid metabolism and managing cholesterol levels, we selected specific strains that displayed strong in vitro ability to influence cholesterol metabolism.”

“The resulting blend of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KABP-011, L. plantarum KABP-012, and L. plantarum KABP-013, marketed as KABP Cardio, was recently clinically shown to support heart health by impacting LDL particle size and apolipoproteins — relevant biomarkers in cardiovascular health,” he explains.

Hormonal balance is another gut function that has received increased attention recently. Kaneka Probiotics created its “first-of-its-kind” probiotic, KABP Menopause, to aid in hormone balance during and after menopause.

“The probiotic strains in this blend, particularly Levilactobacillus brevis KABP-052, show high capacity for deconjugating estrogen through the activity of the microbial enzyme ß-glucuronidase — helping the body recover estrogen that would otherwise be naturally eliminated,” comments Riera.

“As a result, KABP Menopause has been shown in a recent clinical study to help maintain healthy estrogen levels in healthy peri- and post-menopausal women. Science with evidence 

Theis at Beneo emphasizes that the widespread influence of gut health and prebiotics has brought a surge in research, insights, and further substantiation on diverse effects on gut health and general well-being. 

He points to ongoing research on prebiotic chicory root fiber for its connection to enhancing mood and cognition, improving metabolic diseases, and reducing inflammation.

“For instance, a study conducted by Jackson et al. demonstrates that the intake of the prebiotic dietary fiber oligofructose alone, or in combination with the human milk oligosaccharide 2’fucosyllactose, promotes a significant increase in Bifidobacteria in the gut and can result in substantial improvements in mood in healthy adults with mild to moderate feelings of anxiety and depression.”

To meet consumer demands for scientifically proven health benefits, Theis says producers need to use research-backed prebiotics like Orafti Inulin and Oligofructose.

“At the same time, the importance of the right on-pack communication cannot be underestimated, and producers and functional ingredient providers will need to continue to work closely together to ensure that evidence-based information helps guide consumers’ purchasing decisions and protects the reputation of the product and brand.”
