Zeus Hygia marries antioxidants, curcumin and chlorogenic acid in muscle recovery launch
08 Mar 2022 --- Zeus Hygia is targeting North American athletes of all levels with its Gremin performance ingredient. The water-soluble powder is touted as accelerating muscle recovery along with improving stamina and endurance.
It can be used as a standalone product or formulated with protein powders, the India-based company notes.
“Gremin is the first and only branded ingredient combining proven super antioxidants, soluble chlorogenic acid and insoluble curcumin in a matrix system,” says Zeus Hygia co-founder and director Arunkanth Krishnakumar.
“Brands can claim it supports muscle health, muscle recovery from wear and tear in exercising and sports, in addition to supporting endurance.”Ingredients in the sports nutrition space are driven by performance interests such as stamina and endurance.
Herbal ingredients for efficacy
Gremin is backed with two scientific studies that position it as a performance ingredient in the sports nutrition segment across all age groups, the company adds.
The item is a proprietary patent-pending nutraceutical compound containing dual polyphenols, chlorogenic acid and curcuminoids.
“Gremin is made by utilizing a platform technology that delivers synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions to support improving stamina and endurance,” explains Krishnakumar.
“This unique ingredient was developed by embedding herbal extracts in a matrix system to ensure better efficacy and therapeutic benefits.”
Honing into the science
In its most recent study, 16 participants took either 500 mg of Gremin or placebo for ten days. The researchers sought to discover the potential impact on recovery from muscle injury, evaluating inflammatory biomarkers such as TNF alpha and c-reactive protein.
Scientists also attempted to understand participants’ pain scores using the visual analog scale (VAS) and monitor creatine kinase levels, lactate dehydrogenase and blood urea nitrogen.
The results showed those who consumed Gremin experienced a 30.6% decrease in creatine kinase, compared to 1.53% in placebo. The VAS score improved by 60% for those who took the ingredient, compared to 31.6% in placebo.
Additionally, C-reactive protein levels were minimal in the Gremin group, compared to a peak of approximately 400% in the placebo group. The supplement group performed more squats (an increase of 28%) than the placebo (13% more).
“In addition to muscle recovery, pain management and anti-inflammatory benefits of Gremin through various mechanisms, it was shown to have a positive impact on stamina and endurance levels,” Krishnakumar comments.
Interest in sports nutrition has greatly increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw an expansion of consumer bases beyond professional athletes.
