Survey Reveals the Potential Role of Chicory Root Fiber in Improving Health
07 Jul 2015 --- A new survey in the US has revealed that there is a growing consumer awareness of the role chicory root fibre can play in improving our health. The research, which was carried out by Sensus, a global supplier of chicory root fibre, also showed that a large proportion of consumers now have a strong interest in healthier eating.
The research showed that almost 70% regularly opt for food and beverages that can contribute to better health and 63% make healthy food choices to address specific health concerns. US consumers are particularly interested in healthier, tasty food products, with lower sugar content and that use natural alternatives to conventional sugar: 66% of those surveyed expressed an interest in food products containing chicory root fiber – a natural, prebiotic, soluble dietary fiber.
"The survey showed that concern about getting diabetes, having diabetes or a family history of diabetes were often mentioned reasons to check the sugar level of a product," explained a spokesman for Sensus. "Our study also found that younger people believe protein delivers a longer feeling of fullness, whereas people over the age of 55 believe fibre delivers that feeling. The majority think that the combination of protein and fibre will make them feel full for longer."
Chicory root fiber, also known as inulin or oligofructose, is sourced from natural chicory roots and has significant, scientifically-proven health benefits. It can enhance blood sugar management, support weight reduction and improve bowel health.
Chicory root fiber boosts the fiber content of foods. It is also a natural sweetener with an excellent effect on glycemic response that also reduces the amount of processed sugar and fat needed within food products, and enhances the taste and texture of foods.
“Combining high levels of interest in healthier eating identified in our survey and growing interest in chicory root fiber, the widespread uptake of healthier, tasty products with lower sugar content could contribute towards lowering the incidence of obesity and diabetes in the US,” said Elaine Vaughan, Chief Scientific Officer at Sensus.
“Chicory root fiber is already incorporated into a wide variety of food products available in the US, including selected brands of dairy foods, bread and bakery products, confectionary and beverages, but there is scope for many more.”
