Stratum Nutrition branches out to India after NEM receives pre-market approval
02 Dec 2021 --- Stratum Nutrition has received pre-market approval in India for its natural eggshell membrane (NEM) product.
“This approval should allow NEM to establish its place as an innovative, science-backed ingredient in India’s consumer market,” says Dr. Kevin J. Ruff, senior director of scientific and regulatory affairs at Stratum Nutrition.
The approval from the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for Stratum Nutrition and its Indian partner Zenova Bionutrition was a result of a lengthy review process for the partially hydrolyzed chicken eggshell membrane powder.
This is a requirement for foods with a special medical purpose, novel foods, health supplements and nutraceuticals in India, Stratum notes.
“India will be a solid and strategic market for Stratum moving forward,” adds Ruff.
Global acceptance
NEM is one of the few joint health ingredients and the only eggshell membrane ingredient that is supported by a full portfolio of 16 research studies, notes the company.
“Being ovo-vegetarian, NEM makes a great combination with curcumin-based ingredients for joint health,” underscores Ruff.
The scientific efforts are driving Stratum’s goals to increase global acceptance of NEM as a joint health ingredient, says Chris Haynes, senior director of global sales at Stratum Nutrition.
“This is fundamental for the health and well-being of the global population,” he adds.
“NEM’s exponential success of country-by-country registration clearly demonstrates the scientific validation of its function and results. Governmental agencies require statistically significant science to grant approvals – NEM provides this and continues to gain regulatory acceptance everywhere it enters a market.”
Joint health ingredient
The use of NEM in supplement applications has been observed to be increasing. It contains calcium carbonate, protein, glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid and its use on a joint health platform is growing.
Last year, Stratum Nutrition’s NEM received confirmation in a new independent study that it can reduce joint pain and stiffness in patients with grade 2 and 3 osteoarthritis knee. The statistics revealed that the ingredient made from upcycled eggshell membranes can take effect within seven to ten days, with clinically meaningful benefits persisting for 90 days.
The company also recently entered a partnership with KD Pharma to develop a joint health formula combining Stratum’s NEM and KD Pharma’s marine omega oils.
Applications for eggshell membranes have also been spotlighted for personal care and gut health, featuring a fermented eggshell membrane collagen ingredient that increases bioavailability.
