Stratum and KD Pharma partner on omega 3 and eggshell synergy for joint health
04 Aug 2020 --- Stratum Nutrition and KD Pharma have entered into a partnership to develop a joint health formula combining Stratum’s NEM brand eggshell membrane and KD Pharma’s marine omega oils. The collaboration comes at the heels of a study published in the International Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which found “promising results” for the ingredient combination on joint health. Marketed as Move3, the synergistic duo will be sold in soft gels with both Stratum and KD agreeing on a global exclusive to combine NEM and KD Pharma’s marine fish oils.
“The body of science supporting exercise and recovery benefits for both omega 3 and NEM continues to grow, but this study is unique because it demonstrates benefits in healthy people consuming the Move3 formulation after they have exercised,” says Adam Ismail, Chief Strategy Officer of the KD Pharma Group.
Ingredient synergy
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed to evaluate whether the combination of NEM brand eggshell membrane and KD-Pür brand concentrated omega 3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from fish oil (Move3) versus placebo would reduce cartilage turnover and alleviate joint pain and stiffness. This was measured immediately following exercise and 12 hours post-exercise in 85 healthy men and women, aged 40 to 75 years, who performed a step exercise regimen of 40 to 100 steps per leg, on alternating days, for two consecutive weeks.
According to the company, Move3 produced statistically significant reductions in levels of CTX-II, a biomarker of cartilage degradation, versus the placebo, after one and two weeks of exercise (-12.9 percent and -17.7 percent, respectively). Compared to the placebo, Move3 supplementation also significantly relieved joint pain immediately after exercise (-28.6 percent, p=0.049) at one week, pain 12 hours after exercise (-46.7 percent, p=0.035) at one week, and stiffness 12 hours after exercise at one week (-40 percent, p= 0.042).
“For sports nutrition products, it is important that consumers are able to feel the benefit and the fact that we saw a significant improvement compared to placebo means that the subjects not only felt the impact of Move3 but also observed its effects in a rapid timeframe,” Ismail adds.
Kevin Ruff, Ph.D., Senior Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs for Stratum Nutrition, notes that “conducting this clinical trial in exercising healthy adults will allow brands to make label claims relating to joint pain and stiffness and even cartilage protection.”
”This is an additional benefit that Move3 provides,” he adds.
Therefore, the use of a nutraceutical such as Move3 provides possible new approaches for alleviating joint pain and stiffness associated with exercise, the company underscores.
What’s cracking in joint health?
With an aging population and continued interest in sports nutrition, joint health is an active space for ingredient companies.
In July, Bioiberica’s native type II collagen b-2Cool was featured in Laboratorios Ordesa’s new launch, dubbed Colnatur Forte. The product is a food supplement recommended for the intensive care of joints and bones. Colnatur Forte has a formula based on b-2Cool, willow extract, devil’s claw extract, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.
Meanwhile, UK health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett launched Vitaboost Levagen. It is touted as the first commercially available effervescent supplement to contain Gencor’s palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) ingredient, Levagen+. PEA is positioned as an alternative to CBD, which can be used in the arena of joint health.
