Solabia-Algatech Nutrition targets post-workout muscle pain with new astaxanthin multi-blend
22 Nov 2021 --- Solabia-Algatech Nutrition is releasing AstaPure Max, a magnesium glycerophosphate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and AstaPure Arava multi-blend that reduces post-exercise muscle pain and fatigue.
The formula is centered on Solabia-Algatech Nutrition’s Astapure Arava whole-algae complex, which delivers natural astaxanthin.
“The astaxanthin segment is booming globally. We have witnessed a year-on-year increase in demand for astaxanthin and an extension of its use in different applications,” Doron Safrai, CEO of Solabia-Algatech Nutrition, tells NutritionInsight.
“These applications include functional foods and supplements and for numerous health categories such as eye health, beauty from within, mental health as well as sports nutrition.”
Investigating AstaPure Max
AstaPure Max was designed to protect muscles from oxidative damage and enhance muscle performance. Therefore, it results in improved athletic performance.
Notably, an eight-week survey found participants who consumed the astaxanthin multi-blend AstaPure Max had a significant reduction in post-high-endurance exercise muscle pain.
“As a manufacturer of astaxanthin, our goal is to keep bringing astaxanthin-centered innovation to the market. That is why we developed the AstaPure Max formula for the flourishing sports nutrition category,” Safrai continues.
AstaPure Max is suitable for hard-shell capsules, tablets and can be included functionally in gummies and bars. The AstaPure Max multi-blend supports muscle function and boosts cellular energy.
Algae complex
Solabia-Algatech’s formula is composed of a whole astaxanthin algae complex derived from the microalgae Haematococcus Pluvialis.
According to the company, it is cultivated in a closed and controlled system fully exposed to the natural sunlight that resembles the desert environment in which it grows. This strain is naturally charged with high-value omega oils, fibers, proteins, vitamins and phospholipids.
“AstaPure Max offers a comprehensive and optimized blend of ingredients with our home-grown astaxanthin,” explains Omer Grundman, vice president of R&D and biology for Solabia-Algatech Nutrition.
Magnesium glycerophosphate and vitamin B6
Muscles contain 27% of the magnesium found in the body making it a vital nutrient.
Magnesium glycerophosphate consists of magnesium, glycerol and phosphorus. The magnesium formulation does not cause abdominal discomfort or diarrhea.
Also, supplementation with magnesium glycerophosphate has been shown to relax contracted muscles.
The vitamin B6 found in AstaPure Max is involved in numerous metabolic activities, including protein metabolism, muscle building, repair and release of glucose from glycogen (needed to provide energy during exercise). It also aids magnesium absorption.
Notably, vitamin B6 is a go-to ingredient among sports professionals and enthusiasts whose active lifestyles put them at greater risk of this vital micronutrient deficiency.Supplementation with magnesium glycerophosphate has been shown to relax contracted muscles.
Monitoring pain levels, cramps and recovery
The pain that ensues from strenuous exercise is called “delayed-onset muscle soreness” and can signal damage to muscle tissues. The company details that evidence links the delayed muscle soreness to the excess free radicals associated with oxidative stress.
This can lead to muscle damage and extend the recovery time between workouts.
Solabia-Algatech Nutrition’s survey assessed the effect of AstaPure Max versus placebo on 160 participants who exercise regularly at least three times a week.
The participants were instructed to complete an online survey twice a week to monitor their experience, level of pain, cramps and recovery.
While the Asta Pure Max treatment group showed a substantial reduction in the number of subjects reporting pain, the placebo group showed only a mild reduction. In the treatment group, the number of subjects that reported pain after exercise was reduced from 74% at baseline to 47% after seven weeks and only 35% after eight weeks.
These results differed from the placebo group, which reported 65% at baseline, no change on week seven and a slight reduction to 58% at week eight.
NutritionInsight previously reported on astaxanthin’s potential in reducing inflammation. In particular, Solabia-Algatech Nutrition’s AstaPure astaxanthin ingredient has also been shown to improve healthy aging, skincare and mood.
Innova Market Insights’ data unveiled that products targeting inflammation are usually featured in the sports nutrition category.
