PLT Health Solutions embraces carbon neutrality as “good business” strategy
08 Nov 2021 --- PLT Health Solutions is now certified as a carbon neutral company as part of its strategy for environmental protection and sustainable sourcing.
The US-based company received Carbonfree partner designation and has instituted an emissions reduction program to lower its environmental impact, it highlights.
“Environmental protection, sustainable sourcing, protection of natural resources and ethical conduct are not only the right thing to do – they are also good business,” explains Devin Stagg, chief operating officer for PLT Health Solutions.
“Without a vibrant global ecosystem, we won’t have access to the natural, botanical materials that form the foundation of our products.”
Concrete action
The company says it is offsetting both its electricity usage and shipping carbon emissions through offsets generated from The Envira Amazonia Project. The project is a tropical forest conservation initiative located in Brazil that combines conservation with community development activities.
“Without a partnership-type relationship with the communities that grow, harvest and process these raw materials, PLT Health Solutions could lose access to the indigenous knowledge and innovation that makes our ingredients relevant and special,” Stagg notes.
As part of its attempts to reduce carbon emissions from its global operations, the company is consolidating its international product shipments to reduce cargo emissions. It is also balancing essential business travel with virtual meetings to reduce air travel emissions.
Mitigating climate change
The company also has workplace initiatives such as energy-efficient investments and moving files and documentation to electronic formats to minimize paper use.
PLT Health Solutions is also partnering with global carbon reduction and offset organization Carbonfund.org Foundation.
“We applaud PLT Health Solutions for its commitment to mitigating climate change via neutralizing its corporate emissions. We are at a crucial moment for protecting the Amazonian Basin and reducing climate change. We greatly appreciate PLT’s support toward tropical forest conservation,” underscores Eric Carlson, president of Carbonfund.org Foundation.
Ingredients across the globe
Earlier this year, the company’s ceramide dietary supplement for skincare received approval in Korea. The breakthrough was a result of a collaboration with Robertet and Korean distributor Novarex.
In North America, PLT Health Solutions introduced a propolis ingredient to its immune health portfolio. The company described the move as not catching up to the immunity trend but moving into new territory.
It has also received green light from Canada to market its AlbioLife ingredient as supporting respiratory health, which the company flagged as an issue weighing strongly on consumers’ minds.
Companies reacting to climate change concerns
Attempts to become carbon-neutral have been observed across the industry, with BASF announcing plans to invest up to €4 billion (US$4.7 billion) by 2030 to cut CO2 emissions in half in its current business by the end of this decade.
In February, France-based natural ingredients company Nexira said it had achieved carbon neutrality for its Inavea line of acacia gum products.
Meanwhile, Gerber also revealed its commitment to carbon neutrality for organic products by 2022. The revelation is part of its new Climate Forward Nutrition ambition, which the company says is the first US company to announce a commitment to producing carbon-neutral baby food products.
Danone’s specialized nutrition site in Brazil received three environmental certifications from Carbon Trust earlier this year.
