Thailand greenlights Balchem’s OptiMSM for healthy aging supplement brands
Key takeaways
- Balchem gains Thailand FDA approval for OptiMSM at 1 g daily maximum.
- Thailand’s aging population drives demand for mobility, beauty, and vitality solutions.
- OptiMSM supplies sulfur for joints, connective tissues, skin, hair, nails, and glutathione antioxidants.

Balchem has gained Thailand FDA’s approval of its OptiMSM ingredient, applicable for beauty-from-within, muscle recovery, joint health, and active aging supplements. The methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) ingredient can be taken daily at a maximum dose of 1 g.
The nutrition company secured the approval with food and pharmaceutical ingredients distributor Rama Production, enabling Thai manufacturers to apply OptiMSM in new product development.
Prakaithip Ekwongsupasarn, assistant sales director at Rama Production, says: “As an OptiMSM distributor in Thailand, we are proud to bring a globally recognized ingredient to support joint health and beauty-from-within solutions for the Thai market.”
Demographic needs
The Thai population is growing older, with people aged above 60 outnumbering youths under 15 by 4.1 million, reports Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space technology Development Agency.

There is an increased demand for solutions that support active aging aspects, notes Balchem, such as mobility, vitality, and overall well-being, driven by the demographic shift. They add that Thai consumers also strive to look and feel their best for longer.
Innova Market Insights data finds that one in four consumers in Asia-Pacific reported buying food or beverage products to improve physical appearance between 2024 and 2025.
Optimistic about OptiMSM
According to Balchem, its OptiMSM can help brands meet Thai consumer needs, as it is a science-based source of sulfur, a key building block of joints and connective tissues, helping maintain joint function and support healthy skin, hair, and nails.
Sulfur also supports the production of key molecules like glutathione that help the body’s antioxidant response, according to the Institute of Medicine.
Previously, an OptiMSM study on adults not diagnosed with joint disorders demonstrated promising results in the alleviation of pain and discomfort.
“APAC represents a promising growth market and we’re excited to help our partners unlock new regional opportunities with confidence, leveraging our premium, science-backed, FDA-approved ingredient, OptiMSM,” comments Jessica Arnaly, senior Marketing & Business Development manager at Balchem Human Nutrition & Health.
“We’re proud to partner with Rama Production in Thailand to help local brands innovate and deliver products that meet consumers’ evolving health and wellness needs.”
Last year, OptiMSM was also approved under Japan’s Food with Functional Claims system, marking the first time an MSM ingredient earned this designation in the country.
The ingredient was also recently found to help post-exercise recovery at low doses.
