Nutrition 21’s Velositol bolsters whey’s efficacy for resistance training, suggests study
28 Jul 2021 --- Nutrition21 has demonstrated that its amylopectin-chromium complex, Velositol, can aid resistance training when mixed with 15 g of protein.
The study, published in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition, showed that adding Velositol to a 15 g whey protein dosage increased the number of full squats reps, vertical jump power and vertical jump height to a greater level than 15 g and 30 g of whey protein sole consumption.
“Velositol increases the effects of protein on muscle protein synthesis (MPS) by enhancing the mTOR signaling pathway, which is reliant on amino acids and insulin activity,” explains Danielle Greenberg, vice president of scientific affairs at Nutrition21.
“When used with a resistance exercise program, Velositol’s complex enhances the effects of protein, increasing strength, endurance, and power, while supporting healthy and sustained muscle function.”
Resistance training improved
The study consisted of 35 recreationally active men selected randomly into three groups who consumed their respective supplement(s) after a resistance exercise.
The first group of participants consumed 2 g of Velositol combined with 15 g of whey protein isolate. The second group consumed only 15 g of whey protein isolate, and the third group took 30 g.
The participants were monitored during weeks zero, four and eight of their resistance training. Researchers measured the men’s body composition, whole-body protein balance, upper and lower body performance. Additionally, visual analog scale scores for recovery, sleep quality, energy, motivation to train, and muscle pain were measured.
Velositol explained
Velositol is a patented complex that works well when combined with whey protein, plant protein or branched-chain amino acids. The patented ingredient increases jump power and strength in sports exercise.
This study aimed to investigate if prolonged supplementation with Velositol and a greater protein dose influenced resistance training adaptations, recovery, and safety biomarkers.
Previous studies have demonstrated that combining Velositol with a 6 g dosage of whey protein boosted muscle protein synthesis rates compared to whey protein alone.
Sports nutrition growth
Innova Market Insights data reveals that the sports nutrition category is gaining traction in the global food and beverage sector, featuring 29 percent average annual growth between 2015 and 2019.
Previously, Nutrition 21 was included in Complete Nutrition’s Prime Trim weight management system that features nitrosigine and chromax.
In this space, nitrosigine was found to improve cognitive performance after intense exercise, according to a clinical study by Nutrition21.
