Nitrosigine shows increased cognitive performance post-intense exercise
02 Sep 2020 --- Nitrosigine may improve cognitive performance following intense exercise according to a new clinical study from Nutrition21. The results, published in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition, could open new opportunities in the sports nutrition sector for the patented complex of inositol-stabilized arginine silicate. The researchers underscore that cognitive factors and mental stamina are critical components of athletic success.
The study revealed that acute supplementation with Nitrosigine, Nutrition 21’s patented complex of inositol-stabilized arginine silicate, elicits a significant improvement in cognitive function following intense exercise. This may translate to enhanced athletic performance, as assessed by the Trail Making Test (TMT).
Mental fatigue is a factor that could have profound effects on recreational athletes and physically active individuals who suffer from the condition during extended amounts of exercise.
A recent study supports Nitrosigine’s ability to prevent exercise-induced mental fatigue. Twenty-four healthy, recreationally active males were enrolled in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. A single oral dose of 1500 mg Nitrosigine or placebo was administered 30 minutes before a maximally graded exercise test. Prior to dosing and following exercise, cognitive function was assessed via the TMT, which evaluates motor speed and visual attention. Safety was evaluated during and at the end of the study.
The investigation builds on multiple prior studies where Nutrition21 established “significant cognitive benefits” of the ingredient when participants were resting. Among the findings of safety and efficacy, Nitrosigine was shown to:
1. Be fast-acting: Increases focus, mental flexibility (in a post-hoc analysis) and executive function within 15 minutes.
2. Improve cognitive flexibility (in a post-hoc analysis) by 41 percent versus placebo after a single dose.
3. Significantly boost nitric oxide levels, a key factor for increasing blood flow to working muscles, when compared to baseline.
4. Be a non-stimulant: Nitrosigine increases energy both safely and quickly, as measured by the validated Profile of Mood States questionnaire.
5. Boost muscle pump with significant increases in muscle volume, when compared to baseline.
