Neopac devises precision dropper tube for Streuli Pharma’s vegan vitamin D formulation
02 Apr 2021 --- Hoffmann Neopac (Neopac) has developed a dropper tube for direct, precision administration of Streuli Pharma’s novel vegan vitamin D formulation.
Neopac’s signature Polyfoil tube provides effective barrier protection against moisture and oxygen, metered dosing and easy-to-handle portability.
Products housed in Polyfoil solutions can reportedly achieve longer shelf life than those stored in conventional polyethylene or polypropylene packaging.
Streuli Pharma’s Luce D3 product is seen as an attractive option for the growing consumer base preferring non-animal-derived products.
“This is our first commercial oral dropper tube and we have a big project list of upcoming launches,” Cornelia Schmid, marketing manager at Neopac, tells PackagingInsights.
“In Fall 2021, we will be able to produce the Polyfoil dropper tube with our RecyClass technology approved recyclable Polyfoil MMB.”
Precision-administered drops
The innovative dropper system dispenses droplets individually when light pressure is applied to the tube, with each drop containing 200 IUs of vitamin D.
“The main challenge was to obtain a precise drop size and ensure a consistent drop formation. We overcame this with a highly precise drop insert into our nozzle tube head,” explains Schmid.
Transportable and easy to handle, the tube allows the vegan vitamin D3 product to be directly applied into the mouth.
Schmid adds that the Polyfoil tube is lighter than the glass bottles typically used to package vitamin formulations.
The solution features a special insert on the dropper mechanism designed for liquid, serums or oily content, utilizing Neopac’s Polyfoil 19 mm dropper tube with screw cap.
The insert helps ensure accurate dosing by adjusting the mechanism to the proper bulk texture for ideal drop size.
“Streuli Pharma’s new vegan-friendly formulation speaks to the growing set of consumers whose health consciousness includes a lifestyle free of animal-derived products,” says Ralf Künzi, sales and business development manager at Hoffmann Neopac.
“The combined Polyfoil and dropper tip technologies offer an innovative protection and delivery system for a product that must be administered accurately. We are also proud of the package’s ease of handling and portability.”
Neopac is a global provider of high-quality packaging for a broad array of industries and applications.
Last October, Neopac introduced fully recyclable polyethylene-based tubes with high-density polyethylene flip-top caps in a “market-first.”
Vitamin D demand
For 150 years, Streuli Pharma has produced high-quality medicines predominantly for the Swiss pharmaceutical market.
Streuli Pharma’s Luce D3 product was first launched at pharmacies throughout Switzerland in September 2020. The vegan formulation addresses “the dearth of vitamin D that children and adults tend to experience during the winter months.”
The COVID-19 crisis has led to a sharp rise in immunity positionings. NutritionInsight recently explored trending immunity ingredients – including vitamin D – with industry experts.
While vitamin D has enjoyed heightened consumer consideration through its COVID-19 connection, it remains crucial in preventing bone health damage, such as osteoporosis.
