Mitsubishi Gas Chemical boosts EU supplement compliance with new certifications
Key takeaways
- MGC secured FSSC 22000 and Halal certifications for MGCPQQ, strengthening its compliance credentials for EU supplement manufacturers.
- MGCPQQ is the only PQQ ingredient evaluated by EFSA and approved under the EU Novel Foods list, produced via proprietary fermentation in Japan.
- Backed by decades of research, MGCPQQ is linked to mitochondrial, cognitive, and stress-support benefits, with ongoing gut-brain studies.

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) has obtained two new global certifications — FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) and Halal — for its nutraceutical ingredient, MGCPQQ. This adds to the company’s portfolio of internationally recognized quality ingredients with safety credentials.
The company says the certifications make this proven mitochondrial enhancer “one of the most vetted, high-quality, and safe ingredients” for EU supplement manufacturers.
Moreover, MGC notes that the certifications add its quality-focused approach, which uses data-driven process monitoring and optimization for fermentation-based products.
“We’ve always believed that supplement ingredients must meet the highest standards of quality and safety, and these new certifications reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering precisely that,” says Atsushi Sugimoto, assistant manager at MGC.
The nutraceutical is produced in Japan, using the company’s proprietary natural fermentation process.

“MGCPQQ is already recognized as the only pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) ingredient to have been successfully evaluated for safety and quality by the European Food Safety Authority and to appear on the EU’s approved Novel Foods list,” says the company.
The ingredient is a PQQ disodium salt — a naturally occurring antioxidant found in trace amounts in vegetables, fruits, eggs, dairy, meat, and fermented foods. The compound is also present in human and animal tissues, with research finding particularly high concentrations in human breast milk.
MGCPQQ has become one of the “most researched and tested supplement ingredients” of its kind, the company says, with scientific research spanning the past 40 years.
The latest certifications highlight the importance of verifiable quality systems, especially as consumers increasingly demand safety credentials and documented sourcing.
The ingredient can enhance focus, memory, mood, and cognitive health.Multibeneficial ingredient
Nutrition Insight previously spoke with Sugimoto, who told us that while other forms of PQQ are available on the market, the vast majority of scientific research has been developed using MGCPQQ specifically. He detailed various health benefits linked to the ingredient.
“In recent years, the correlation between the gut and the brain has been attracting attention, so we plan to investigate its effects on gut health. The effect of PQQ on the flora system may be a clue to link the various health benefits that have been revealed so far.”
He shared that the ingredient can enhance focus, memory, mood, and cognitive health. Research has also indicated that MGCPQQ can lower stress, improve sleep, and boost energy.
Other studies on the nutraceutical found that it reduced the infectivity of the Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus (a coronavirus). The antiviral properties of the ingredient are linked to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities.
