Lycored tackles urinary and sleep health for men
04 Sep 2020 --- Lycrored is addressing urinary and sleep issues in men with the launch of LycoComfort. Made with standardized tomato extract and natural phytosterols, the offering is touted as aiding holistic wellness. Prostate health and comfort can greatly impact the quality of life as men age, with oxidative stress potentially leading to interrupted sleep as the result of nighttime trips to the bathroom. However, the bioavailable mix of tomato carotenoids is designed to support healthy aging throughout all stages of life.
“The benefits of lycopene for men’s health and urinary health have long been recognized. In fact this is one of the indications where lycopene was first identified as a powerful nutrient. Specifically, our latest innovation was inspired by the recognition that there is an opportunity here to really make a difference in men’s life, not only by addressing a specific symptom but by actually contributing to different aspects of quality of life,” says Karin Hermoni, Head of Science and Nutrition at Lycored, tells NutritionInsight.
He continues that prostate health can become a significant issue for men as they age and often has a real impact on the quality of sleep. “At Lycored, we know that true wellness requires a holistic approach, with healthy sleeping, eating, exercising, thoughts and emotions working in harmony. LycoComfort was developed to support peaceful sleep and may help ensure we get the support we need to achieve a sense of overall calm.”
In addition to harnessing the power of tomatoes’ carotenoid-rich oleoresin, LycoComfort is touted as creating a naturally occurring synergy through lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene, beta-carotene and vitamin E. It is also enriched with natural phytosterols associated with the relief of the urinary symptoms and urinary flow problems caused by an enlarged prostate gland.
Lycored points to pre-clinical studies indicating that lycopene may control and balance prostate cell growth more effectively in synergy with phytoene and phytofluene. Additionally, lycopene and other tomato phytonutrients can help combat oxidative stress and boost the body’s own coping mechanisms to enhance overall cellular calm in the urinary tract.
Company research shows that 85 percent of men who have experienced a prostate problem suffer from an increased need to urinate at night. In addition, 96 percent of survey respondents said they consider sleep to be important or very important to their quality of life.
Innovating supplements for sleep and men’s health
NPD in the sleep space has been gaining momentum, with Proper launching four sleep formulations paired with a personalized sleep coaching app. Meanwhile, Ancient Nutrition offers a fermented collagen product in a sleep variety. Yuno recently introduced a line of “BioTactical Drinks” designed to be mixed and matched to promote energy, focus, memory retention, relaxation and improve sleep.
Men’s health also is a major market, with IFF Health’s Go-Less Men pumpkin seed-based ingredient for healthy bladder function recently gaining Non-GMO Project Verified certification. Another popular ingredient in this space is saw palmetto, an extract for which Valensa received renewed US Pharmacopeia Ingredient Verification Program for Dietary Ingredients status. Meanwhile, industry moves have been shedding light on the opportunities within paternal health, including within rest and energy.
