Kate Farms launches protein nutrition shake for healthy weight management

Plant-based specialized nutrition brand Kate Farms unveils its first High Protein Nutrition Shake designed for “real change.” Doctors clinically developed the shake, which aims to support consumers in muscle health, managing weight, and navigating GLP-1 treatment. 

The shake helps to fill common nutrient gaps for US citizens with obesity or who are overweight. It contains 25 g of plant-based protein, 6 g of fiber, 27 essential vitamins and minerals, 160 calories, and no sugar. 

All ingredients are plant-based, organic, and non-GMO. The shake is also free of dairy, soy, gluten, artificial colors, and artificial sweeteners. 

“Kate Farms was born out of the concept of Food As Medicine: the idea that quality nutrition has the power to change lives,” explains Brett Matthews, Kate Farms’ CEO and chairman.

Last week, Danone completed the acquisition of Kate Farms to enhance its specialized nutrition offerings in the US. 

Tackling unmet consumer needs

The new product results from 18 months of R&D, which started with identifying an unmet health need due to the rise in GLP-1 usage. People using these medications or on a weight loss journey often have a reduced appetite, which can lead to muscle loss and critical nutrition gaps. 

Last month, GNC researchers revealed that people using weight loss medications consume insufficient protein, fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, choline, and vitamins A, C, D, and E. 

Kate Farms developed the shake to support people using GLP-1 medications or on a weight loss journey with critical nutrition gaps.“Millions of Americans face health needs stemming from obesity and being overweight,” says the company’s chief marketing officer, Catherine Hayden. “These are areas where we believe better nutrition can make a meaningful difference. That’s exactly why we’re here: to help nourish people with the wholesome nutrition they deserve.”

The company’s research team studied the nutritional shortcomings of several protein shakes on the market and gathered insights from healthcare professionals and GLP-1 users. For example, Kate Farms says many shakes on the market are filled with dairy and sugar. 

Based on this data, the company developed a shake with a blend of organic pea protein, soluble and insoluble fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. 

“As we perfected the formula’s profile, we were intent on ensuring that each ingredient served a purpose,” says Joe Rupnow, Kate Farms’ VP of New Enterprises. “For example, the 25 g of organic pea protein helps you support muscle health throughout your health journey.” 

“High Protein Nutrition Shake is a complete source of protein, so it delivers all nine essential amino acids that your body can’t produce on its own.”

In addition to refining nutrients and ensuring the shake met the company’s nutrition standards, the company fine-tuned the shake’s flavor with feedback from real users. 

“We led preference tests, sensory panels, and tastings with real people, including GLP-1 users,” adds Rupnow. “We pushed the shake’s flavor and sensory experience to make it something you’d want to drink, not just something you should.”
