Karallief lands US patent for “fast-acting” joint relief blend, eyeing formulation partnerships
29 Jun 2022 --- Nutraceutical company, Karallief has been granted a US patent for Easy Climb, a new “fast-acting” herbal extract formula shown to relieve occasional joint discomfort by the US Patent and Trademark Organization (USPTO).
The patent applies to a powder-form herbal blend of balloon vine extract, five-leaved chaste tree, frankincense, bamboo, sweet orange and turmeric.
“We are pleased that the level of innovation in the product was recognized by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO),” Krishna Rajendran, founder and CEO, Karallief tells NutritionInsight.
“Obtaining a patent is very rare for natural products, and only products that are truly innovative are issued a patent,” he says.
“We plan to be a one-stop so
lution for large formulators looking to partner with innovative ingredient companies. Additionally, we always welcome partnerships with formulators who share our vision and would like us to develop customized ingredients for them.”Gold standard?
Karallief’s patent comes following the International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology publishing the results of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study of the ingredients.
“The research conducted for this nutraceutical ingredient was a ‘gold standard’ clinical study,” explains Rajendran.
“The Easy Climb study was conducted over a longer period of time; four months versus the one to two-month study typically done for herbal ingredients.”
The study tested Easy Climb’s effects on 120 adults diagnosed with mild to moderate osteoarthritis in the knee. The subjects were divided into groups and tested with either the herbal blend or a placebo.
“Additionally, by the start of 2023, we will be releasing two more new innovative clinically studied products – KaraCalm and KaraShield,” says Rajendran. “Our plan is to continue to conduct three new clinical studies and develop three new products each year.”
Findings for knee health
The study measured four factors in its participants. The first was a “chair test stand test,” in which the participants sat in a chair and stood repeatedly for 30 seconds. The second was a knee-flexion test that measured range-of-motion in the joint. The study also utilized x-ray analysis of the joint space within the knee and a subjective questionnaire.
“The final optimum product composition was determined after our scientific team analyzed over 100 different herbal combinations across five to six years,” affirms Rajendran. “The results of the study clearly show that the extensive work put in was well worth the effort.”
The results of the study found improvement in all four areas of measurement, with participants experiencing statistically substantial relief of their discomfort.
Ingredient blends for synergy
Innova Market Insights notes in its “Top Trends for 2022” that there is a growing interest in the functionality of products. The study showed that 71% of the respondents found it “important” to “very important” that products improve body functions when making purchasing choices.
“Joint health products are not as popular as others like immunity or sleep products,” says Rajendran. “But I believe a big reason for this is not that consumers don’t want joint health products, but rather they have grown accustomed to using less effective products and don’t really believe a natural, innovative product can be developed for this need.”
“We strongly believe we can change this perception. Movement and exercise are such a fundamental part of our day-to-day activities and overall health that it is impossible to ignore joint health products.”
Turmeric contains curcumin which has an anti-inflammatory function. When combined with frankincense, it can quickly relieve musculoskeletal pain. Moreover, elements in bamboo have been shown to strengthen joints, bones and arteries.
“Our research has shown that when two or more herbal extracts are combined, they work interactively together to provide a stronger, synergistic benefit,” says Rajendran.
