IBN receives patent approval for eriocitrin to support blood glucose management
13 Feb 2020 --- Citrus-derived flavonoids supplier Ingredients by Nature (IBN) has gained patent approval for the use of eriocitrin in its ingredient formulations, including Eriomin. The eriocitrin patent claim is stated as “a method of reducing blood glucose levels in a human subject in need thereof, comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising 100 to 200 mg eriocitrin once per day.” The claim will be officially issued in two to three months and published with its accompanying patent number.
“We couldn’t be happier with the progress we have made to recognize eriocitrin as a viable option for better health. Supported by a successful first clinical trial and now this patent, our line of Eriomin lemon flavonoid blends provide powerful support to managing healthy blood glucose levels. We look forward to revealing additional significant results from ongoing research into the effect that eriocitrin can have on blood glucose levels later this year,” says IBN’s President Rob Brewster.
Eriomin also has other lemon flavonoids, which have demonstrated in clinical studies to help maintain healthy endothelial function, manage inflammation within the healthy range and inhibit α-glucosidase activity.
Eriomin is touted as being a high-potency patent-pending standardized extract from lemons that delivers a multi-functional approach to addressing elevated blood glucose levels, inflammation levels and oxidative stress. Its efficacy has been tested in a human double-blind, placebo-controled clinical trial. Additionally, Eriomin is extracted only from mature fruit and standardized for premium quality and effectiveness.
Eriomin can be used in dietary supplements or as an ingredient for functional foods and beverages.Eriomin’s existing marketing claims include “helps support normal insulin sensitivity,” “helps maintain blood glucose levels within the normal range” and “supports healthy cell function through increased antioxidant activity.”
The product can be used in dietary supplements as a powder for single-ingredient capsules and blends, or in a granulated compressed form for tablets. Furthermore, it is suspendable in beverages, masks bitter flavors and is a natural preservative, making it useful in functional foods and beverages.
Currently, two versions of Eriomin are available, Eriomin Glucose for prediabetes management and Eriomin Esport for a healthy gaming lifestyle, which help maintain blood glucose levels within the normal range.
Affecting one in three US adults, prediabetes is not a single condition, but rather a group of conditions that affect the metabolism of carbohydrates and result in high blood sugar levels. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 30 million people in the US have diabetes and an additional 84 million adults have prediabetes.
In strides to understand prediabetes’ origins better through research, a Nestlé study recently found that the earliest event leading to prediabetes is an early dysfunction of the beta-cell – the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels – independent of body weight. “For the first time, the Nestlé researchers were able to show that the first events leading to prediabetes are linked to beta-cells defects,” a Nestlé spokesperson told NutritionInsight.
