Gut health NPD proliferates for immunity and weight management
19 Jun 2020 --- Losers’ Chews are the debut product from NutriSuits, a nutritionist-led and no-added-sugar supplement brand. The chewable combines prebiotics and probiotics with vitamin D3 to boost long-term gut health, support weight loss and enhance the immune response. This comes as COVID-19 has amplified consumer demand for immunity products, with gut health being one area of focus. Also in this space, Organic India USA has launched Psyllium Pre & Probiotic Fiber to address immunity demands.
“I always recommend my clients start a regime of probiotic supplements, as well as supplement with vitamin D, but I could not find a sugar-free brand that wasn’t sweetened with maltitol. Even in low doses, maltitol can lead to severe digestive upset. That’s why I created Losers’ Chews, to deliver what I believed was missing,” says Sophie Anson, Co-Founder of NutriSuits.
She formulated the product after 20 years as a professional nutritionist and Founder of EatStrong. Each chewable includes over 20 billion Colony Forming Units (CFUs) to nurture a healthy microbiome. The no-added-sugar chewable supplement is sweetened with gut-friendly stevia and xylitol and doesn’t require refrigeration.
“As someone who has struggled with my weight in the past, I can attest to the benefits of a probiotic supplement. Losers’ Chews is a chewable probiotic packed with enough microbes to make a difference - plus prebiotics to nurture their proliferation in the gut. Finally, vitamin D3 helps support your immune system and has been shown to boost fat loss,” continues Anson.
With 15 different strains of prebiotics and probiotics, NutriSuits states that Losers’ Chews provide the following benefits:
- Promotes healthy weight management: Lactobacillus rhamnosus is a key ingredient that has proven to promote weight loss in women, according to a 2014 study by the British Journal of Nutrition. Probiotic-induced weight loss is associated with significant reductions in fat mass and increased circulating leptin concentrations, which is the hormone responsible for satiety.
- Immune support: Vitamin D is produced by the body in response to sunlight and is often lauded for its health benefits. It is crucial for the activation of immune system defenses and has both anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties. Vitamin D is known to enhance the function of immune cells, protecting your body against pathogens.
- Supports digestion and gut balance: The prebiotics and probiotics included in Losers’ Chews aid in balancing your microbiome. This helps reduce or eliminate bloat.
- Stay energized for longer: Healthy gut flora synthesize the production of vitamins that support energy production.
- Mood Booster: The gastrointestinal tract has its own nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system. This complex system has 200 million neurons and is able to make decisions in the body without first checking in with the brain. A healthy gut directly and positively affects mood.
The chews are also touted as helping those facing pill fatigue or difficulty taking pills. NPD using alternative delivery formats is on the rise, with chewable forms featuring in a range of recent launches. Diversifying delivery formats were also in the spotlight at Nutraceuticals Europe in March.
According to Innova Market Insights, traditional tablets and capsules continue to be the preferred supplement dosage forms for EMEA consumers, but functional beverages and drinks are now in second and third place. Meanwhile, 7 percent of EMEA consumers prefer gummies.
Also in the gut space, Organic India USA has launched Psyllium Pre & Probiotic Fiber in Orange, Cinnamon Spice and Original. The product is touted as offering five-in-one benefits, including organic prebiotic fiber, which nourishes beneficial gut bacteria and triphala, a classic blend of three ayurvedic herbs. These are amla, bibhitaki and haritaki to aid in digestion and nutrient assimilation. Meanwhile, heat-stable probiotics support a healthy microbiome.
The product can be used for baking, mixing into meals, and blending into smoothies. It is also gluten-free, vegan, keto and paleo-friendly. “Science supports the findings that a healthy gut is the key to robust immune health. We are listening to our consumers who are searching for innovative products that contribute to overall digestive health,” explains CEO Miguel Gil.
Gut health has been in the spotlight throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with Biosearch Life launching a clinical trial examining the effect of its Hereditum Immunactiv K8 product on COVID-19. Meanwhile, ADM Biopolis recently launched a clinical trial into the effects of administering a food supplement containing three of ADM’s live probiotic strains on COVID-19 patients.
