FrieslandCampina Ingredients unveils algae-based omega-3 brain health range
04 Mar 2024 --- Today, FrieslandCampina Ingredients launches Biotis DHA FlexP 15 and Biotis DHA FlexP 20, two new algae-based, microencapsulated DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) powders for brain health, suitable for vegan and vegetarian formulations designed for food, drinks and supplements. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid linked to brain, eye and cardiovascular health.
“Research shows that omega-3s have strong health connotations, but despite widespread recognition, global intake remains low,” Vicky Davies, global marketing director of performance, active and medical nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, tells Nutrition Insight.
“DHA is an omega-3 that is well known for supporting brain health. But people often struggle to get enough DHA in their diets, stating common pain points that DHA supplements have a strong fishy odor or taste, come in oversized capsules or the fact that many products are made using fish oil and are therefore unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans.”
“With Biotis DHA Flex Powders, we’re going back to the original source of omega-3s — using algae instead of the fish that consume it. By providing both vegetarian and vegan solutions, we’re addressing common consumer barriers head-on and meeting the needs of diverse dietary lifestyles,” Davies continues.
Microencapsulation tech
The Biotis DHA Flex Powder range includes Biotis DHA FlexP 15, which offers a 15% DHA load for vegan formulations, and a vegetarian variant, Biotis DHA FlexP 20, that uses dairy proteins in the powder and provides a 20% DHA load.
“Biotis DHA Flex Powders use algae oil that is encapsulated in a protective barrier to shield the oil against oxidation,” Davies details. “The protective layer consists of a carbohydrate (lactose or glucose syrup) and a protein or starch powder mixture. We’ve been perfecting our unique microencapsulation process for over 23 years with Gea Filtermat technology, which uses a mild and short process.”
The process of microencapsulation used in the production of Biotis DHA Flex Powders contributes to the superior sensory properties of the product, says Davies. “With a highly controlled gas flow and low physical stress, there’s less damage to the encapsulated DHA oil compared to conventional spray drying.”
“In our new Biotis DHA Flex Powders, this results in well-agglomerated, round and unbroken powder particles with improved physical and sensory properties. This means formulators can make use of highly concentrated, superior quality DHA, safe in the knowledge that it will appeal to consumers in end products, as well as remain stable over a long period of time.”
“Our microencapsulation process also means Biotis DHA Flex Powders have sensory properties, with a neutral taste and smell combined with great solubility and versatility, which opens up a world of innovative formats outside of traditional capsules and pills.”
The DHA oil is encapsulated in a powder with 4 g of vitamin C per 100 g of the product. “Vitamin C is well documented for supporting immune health, and its addition in our powder matrix is just one way our new Biotis DHA Flex Powders present the nutrition industry with a unique offering,” Davies continues.
“The vitamin C addition plays two roles, both as a nutrient source and as an antioxidant to protect the oil in the encapsulate from oxidation. The amount of vitamin C is high enough to make an immune health-related claim, both in Europe and the US.”
Targeting health-conscious consumers
Davies anticipates the introduction of the Biotis DHA Flex Powders to disturb the omega-3 supplement market. “We expect the target demographic for our Biotis DHA Flex Powders to mainly include health-conscious consumers interested in omega-3 supplements, particularly those with plant-based, vegan or vegetarian dietary preferences.”
“By offering both vegetarian and vegan options, the new range addresses a growing consumer demand for plant-based alternatives. This inclusivity is likely to further drive consumer adoption, as people looking for omega-3 supplements can now find suitable options aligned with their lifestyle choices.”
“This demographic is likely to encompass a wide range of age groups, from young adults to seniors, who prioritize cognitive health and overall well-being,” she details. “We’re hopeful the introduction of Biotis DHA Flex Powders will have a positive impact on consumers’ ability to access the omega-3s they need to get the most out of life, always.”
Davies indicates anticipated interest in Biotis DHA Flex Powders from the aging population, which is focused on longevity. “Over 55s are taking an increasingly preventative approach to their well-being; they want products that support brain health so they can stay sharp and active — which is where DHA comes in.”
“We’re also likely to see uptake from e-gamers and heavy screen users, as more consumers recognize the role of omega-3s in increasing focus and visual acuity during long screen sessions. Plus, with research showing the added benefits of DHA in supporting recovery after intense exercise, our Biotis DHA Flex Powders appeal to fitness enthusiasts and athletes too.”
Product formulation potential
Davies expresses confidence in the sensory profile and flexibility of the Biotis DHA Flex Powders, which she argues will empower B2B customers to create “supplement formats, such as gummies, fast melts and powder sticks.”
“These formats are not only convenient but also delicious, enhancing consumer experience and satisfaction. Crucially, our solution maintains a DHA dose that meets various health claim requirements, ensuring both efficacy and regulatory compliance. This versatility in product formulation opens up even more opportunities for brands to differentiate themselves in the market and cater to diverse consumer preferences, ultimately driving further adoption and market growth.”
She continues that fast melts are another exciting application area. “The powder can be formulated in dissolvable strips for on-the-go consumption, ideal for those with busy lifestyles or difficulty swallowing pills. Powder sticks, too, are versatile and customizable — they can be offered as single-serve sachets for easy mixing into beverages or food.”
The ingredients in Biotis DHA Flex Powders are also designed to work well with other nutritional ingredients such as proteins, probiotics, vitamins and minerals.
Davies concludes that these product formats align with the current consumer trend for convenience, facilitating individuals to fit omega-3s into their daily routines. “The Biotis DHA Flex Powder range can also be customized to offer personalized supplementation according to taste and dietary needs.”
