Protein is hot on the market right now, with more and more products with a high protein claim being launched, according to Antonio Sánchez, at FrieslandCampina DMV. As consumers become more health conscious and products intended for sports people become increasingly mainstream, proteins, which are DMV’s core business, will further grow as the division's main area for innovation. Speaking to NutritionInsight at SIAL, Sánchez discussed the company’s portfolio of functional and nutritional dairy protein ingredients. “Protein enrichment and fortified foods are significant categories that have been growing for some time and continue to do so. It is a concept and a trend that we cannot ignore,” he says.
FrieslandCampina Ingredients highlighted the recent FDA opinion on dietary fibers, from which they could benefit them as a GOS (Galacto-Oligosaccharides) supplier. A prebiotic peach and apple white tea concept was presented, while high protein cookies with a chocolate hazelnut dip were also on display. Sarah Staley of FrieslandCampina spoke about GOS as a trending prebiotic fiber. “There is a lot of interest in clean, green and label-friendly ingredients and fiber is one that they are looking for, but in good tasting applications. This really means a lot more flexibility for formulators to offer something that has both prebiotic and fiber benefits,” she notes.
There has been particularly strong recent development happening in the clean label mainstreaming of sports nutrition products. At Vitafoods Europe 2018, FrieslandCampina’s consumer research highlighted a need for clean ingredients as well as innovative flavor profiles. The results of a consumer study showed that 69 percent of sports nutrition consumers find all-natural ingredients to be appealing in these types of products. To address this demand, DMV has come up with native protein launches. “We are highlighting Nutri Whey native and that is some shakes, RTDs. What we highlight is how Nutri Whey native is a concept where we really try to target the millennials. We developed it together with Givaudan, where we looked at what flavor profile consumers are looking for,” says Ramon Mommersteeg at the company.
There is a big trend toward hydrolyzed proteins in performance nutrition. “It’s really part of performance nutrition, the growth of the segment. You can really see the mainstreaming part, as well as the intensity of people [who are] performing more sports and are more serious about sports,” says Ramon Mommersteeg. With an increasing number of people knowing someone in their family or friends who is practicing for a marathon, an iron man event or something similar, people are becoming more and more interested in high-quality, protein-related sports nutrition products. FrieslandCampina’s Nutri Whey Hydro product is one of the nicest hydrolyzed proteins available, the company believes.
