FrieslandCampina at SupplySide West: Boosting gut health and muscle growth with prebiotics and proteins
14 Oct 2022 --- Ahead of the SupplySide West exhibition in Las Vegas, US (Oct 31 - Nov 4), Dutch dairy giant FrieslandCampina previews its highlighted products, with a focus on its recent protein and prebiotic ingredients. The company aims to help brands “unlock opportunities in the supplement and functional food and drinks markets.”
“With two out of three consumers recognizing that gut health is the key to overall well-being, we’re showcasing Biotis GOS-OP High Purity to inspire manufacturers and demonstrate the new capabilities within gut health supplements made possible by our latest innovation,” Auke Zeilstra, managing director for North America at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, tells NutritionInsight.
Biotis delivers approximately 94% galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), making it the company’s purest prebiotic.
“This trend we’ve seen flourish throughout the year as more people prioritize their gut health, intending to improve their sleep, mood, stress, muscle function, immunity and more. This consumer demand for more gut microbiome-supporting products is why we developed Biotis GOS-OP High Purity,” says Zeilstra.
“We anticipate that this latest innovation will be particularly welcome in the nutraceutical gummies market, one of the fastest growing nutraceutical segments in the world, with a projected CAGR of 10.2% to 2027.”
Products on the stand
FrieslandCampina is also highlighting Plantaris, a plant-based protein powder solution, at SupplySide West.
FrieslandCampina is tapping into the growing consumer demand for healthy products on-the-go with its fortified protein water.Plantaris Pea Isolate 85 A and Plantaris Faba Isolate 90 A provide up to 25 g of high-quality protein per serving to meet the growing demand for plant-based proteins that are nutritious and mimic dairy’s taste and texture, details the company.
“Global data suggests that 42% of people now consider themselves flexitarian and there is a huge appetite for plant-based proteins that offer high-quality nutrition and an appealing sensory profile. Launched at the end of 2021, Plantaris combines our protein expertise with AGT Foods’ expertise as one of the world’s largest suppliers of value-added pulses, staple foods and ingredients,” continues Zeilstra.
He explains that Plantaris does not compromise on taste, texture or performance, which is important since almost half of consumers (47%) find plant-based meat alternatives less appealing than animal proteins. Plantaris aims to provide a cleaner taste and, for the beverage sector, it seeks to provide a neutral taste and satisfying creamy texture.
Meanwhile, FrieslandCampina taps into the growing consumer demand for healthy products on-the-go with its fortified protein water from the same product line. Low in calories and high in nutrients, the Nutri Whey Isolate Clear and Biotis delivers 5 g of GOS and 20 g of protein per serving (500 ml). The combination allows for enhanced muscle strength while serving the gut microbiome.
“The high concentration of GOS means Biotis GOS-OP High Purity can be formulated into smaller formats, making it ideal for the supplements market. High purity GOS can be effective at doses as small as 2 g meaning less product is needed to deliver the holistic health benefits consumers expect from gut health supplements,” Zeilstra underscores.
Prioritizing gut health
Consumers are increasingly taking a proactive approach to their health. “Popular health benefits include strength and physical resilience, mental well-being, gut health and immunity – with consumers seeking out applications that address as many of their health priorities as possible in one convenient format,” says Zeilstra. The Nutri Whey Isolate Clear and Biotis deliver 5 g of GOS and 20 g of protein per serving.
“Health priorities in 2022 and beyond are firmly set on achieving feelings of overall well-being, not ‘fixing’ health issues after they’ve arisen. This is no small feat, but convenient and effective supplements and functional foods can help consumers improve their health, even when busy lifestyles make it difficult to do otherwise,” Zeilstra adds.
Katherine Burke, technical sales specialist, and Sophie Zillinger Molenaar, global marketing lead at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, are set to host a presentation at SupplySide West (Nov 3, 2:00PM PST) on the Biotis ingredient’s opportunities.
“There is a significant opportunity for brands to innovate in this area,” says Zillinger Molenaar.
“Gut health supplements are increasingly in demand as they offer busy consumers a convenient way to improve their health and overall well-being. We’re excited to highlight the potential of Biotis GOS-OP High Purity to help brands reimagine prebiotic supplement innovation at this year’s SupplySide West.”
