Fazer’s solein-powered snacks set to debut at Future Food-Tech
Finnish food experience company Fazer unveils three new protein snacks powered by Solar Foods’ innovation, Solein, a protein made from a fermentation process that utilizes air. The snack is being showcased at the ongoing Future Food-Tech event in San Francisco.
The company says it plans to refine its products based on feedback from attendees and anticipates a wider European launch in the coming years.
Fazer’s new snacks are part of its “Taste the Future concept,” which emphasizes sustainable ingredients and production methods. The limited-edition lineup includes the Fazer Taste the Future Snack Bar with dark chocolate coating and hazelnuts, the Fazer Taste the Future Oat Snack Drink Choco, and the Fazer Taste the Future Protein Drink Banoffee.
Each product provides a protein boost, while Solein further enhances the nutritional profile by adding iron and vitamin B12 to the animal-free formulations.
“The products introduced by Fazer showcase how Solein excels as an ingredient in protein drinks and healthy snacking,” says Juan-Manuel Benitez-Garcia, the chief commercial officer of Solar Foods. “Solein is now commercially available in Singapore and the US, and we are on track on our estimation to receive novel food approval in the EU in 2026.”
“At the Future Food-Tech event we will offer delegates a unique opportunity to taste the products made with Solein,” reveals Heli Anttila, the VP of new product development at Fazer Confectionery. “With feedback received through the tasting, we will develop the products further.”
Functional and versatile
Fazer previously tested the market with its Taste the Future Snack Bar, which launched in Singapore last year. The company says it is now working toward a broader European rollout featuring a diverse range of Solein-based products.
Solar Foods initiated Solein’s commercialization in the US, targeting the health and performance nutrition sector. In addition to Fazer’s innovations, Italian food company KelpEat also unveiled its own Solein-powered high-protein snacks for the US market.
“These products showcase how extremely versatile and functional Solein is as an ingredient, offering endless possibilities for the food industry to replace traditional animal- and plant-based proteins,” Benitez-Garcia underscores. “By adjusting the amount of Solein and other ingredients, it’s easy to develop products to suit different consumer needs and preferences.”
Sustainable nutrition
Solar Foods reveals it is also developing its own product concepts to demonstrate Solein’s versatility. The first of these, Solein Protein Bites, will showcase the ingredient’s potential in protein snacks.
The company points out that, unlike traditional protein sources such as soy, pea, or whey — Solein provides all nine essential amino acids without cholesterol or saturated fats. It also contains iron and vitamin B12, which plant-based proteins typically lack, while boasting a significantly lower environmental footprint.
With its mild taste and high adaptability, Solar Foods says Solein is expected to play a significant role in the future of sustainable food innovation. The company estimates that Solein will receive regulatory approval as a novel food in the European Union by 2026.
