“Eco-conscious ambitions”: Over 50 percent of US supplement users seek products with sustainable origins, says Lonza

The company is set to showcase its range of naturally derived ingredients, capsules and delivery forms at Natural Products Expo West, to be held next month in California, US. The company’s products tap into the growing consumer interest in natural ingredients sourced with eco-conscious ambitions.
“Lonza’s commitment to responsible business conduct will be demonstrated through its new ‘Responsibly Made’ capsules and finished products, including formulations featuring its patented Plantcaps capsules,” says June Lin, Head of Global Marketing at Lonza Consumer Health & Nutrition.
New to the Lonza booth at this year’s Natural Products Expo West will be its extended range of clean label colored capsules. The different color options are achieved using a variety of plant-based foods, with Vcaps Plus Spicy Yellow and Red Radish capsules set to be launched into the North American market.
Capsugel Plantcaps by Lonza.The Vcaps Plus vegetarian capsule itself is made from FSC-certified hypromellose (HPMC) and water only. Engineered for optimal performance across all types of filling machines, the design of the capsules supports excellent machinability, notes Lonza.
Made from naturally fermented tapioca, Lonza’s Capsugel Plantcaps capsules are highlighted as a versatile delivery solution for the clean-label consumer. Suitable for both liquid and powder fills, Plantcaps capsules provide oxygen defense for sensitive ingredients as well as help mask taste and odor.
Lonza will highlight the potential of this environmentally responsible dosage form through formulations for healthy skin and hair, as well as an entirely vegetarian omega 3 supplement solution featuring algal oil to support cardiovascular and cognitive health.
Completing the at-show experience will be Lonza’s smoothie bar, where customers can sample beverages that showcase the latest additions to its plant-based ingredient portfolio. Both the new vegan MuscleGuard formula and Oceanix, a sustainably sourced phytoplankton ingredient, offer clinically-studied benefits for sports performance and recovery, while ResistAid, an arabinogalactan for immunity support, is derived from North American larch trees.
UC-II undenatured type II collagen will also get the fresh juice treatment, as Lonza highlights new F&B applications for its joint health ingredient manufactured using clean label processes.

Last month, Lonza revealed that increased competition in the space of nutritional hard capsules has negatively impacted its fiscal 2019 profits, although the company reports overall strong sales driven by Pharma Biotech & Nutrition. Lonza also recently waved off fears surrounding coronavirus affecting its Chinese plants, which the company resuming production at the majority of its Chinese facilities.
